Hotel guests seek out free breakfasts, buffets
The number of free meals or snacks eaten at hotels this year inched up 1% as of Sept. 30 over the same period in 2008, even as the number of people staying at hotels dropped significantly. That's in sharp contrast to the number of paid meals eaten in hotel restaurants, which saw a double-digit dip of 14%. "To be up 1% ... Is pretty remarkable, especially in these days and times," says Bonnie Riggs, restaurant industry analyst for the NPD Group, a market research firm. "Those hotels offering up a free breakfast along with the cost of their room are holding up relatively well compared to everyone else." Ref. Source 6
I think it depends on what one calls "free breakfast". When I was a night auditor at a Days Inn here in Oklahoma, we had little packages of instant oatmeal, 12 packs of store-brand sourdough rolls and butter and jelly, hot chocolate, coffee, apple or orange juice, and on weekend mornings, a couple of large trays of fresh sugary doughnuts from a local gas station/doughnut shop. This was the "continental breakfast" for a 4-star rated hotel, but I know it's nothing like the kind of "breakfasts" other hotels, even of this same chain, offered, elsewhere.
Last training course I was on offers free breakfast and supper. Very basic stuff and some questionable in its ability to be digested but if you are not having lots of extra cash it does help. Though the kitchenette (Two burners and a microwave.) that they had was a real life saver. Pick up some basics ad have better food.
