New Year Round Up Local Russian News In English
It has been a relatively calm start to the year for Russia. At home, the first of President Dmitry Medvedev's new measures to fight alcohol consumption was introduced on January 1. Abroad, the annual gas conflict with Ukraine has been averted ? so far. But with presidential elections in theat country coming up on January 17, there is still time for a surprise disruption. Meanwhile, a dispute about oil transit with Belarus remains unresolved, but both sides have vigorously denied reports on Sunday that supplies had been suspended. And the first charter flights between Russia and Georgia since the August 2008 South Ossetian conflict have been announced.
