Acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller resigned amid controversy over the targeting of conservative groups, President Obama said.
The president vowed new safeguards to ensure that such targeting is not repeated at the IRS. "Americans have a right to be angry about it, and I am angry about it," He said. Ref. CNN
President Barack Obama will appoint Danny Werfel as the acting IRS commissioner, the White House announced.
The move comes a day after acting Commissioner Steven Miller was forced to resign amid a controversy over the targeting of conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status.
Werfel is currently the controller of the Office of Management and Budget.
"As we work to get to the bottom of what happened and restore confidence in the IRS, Danny has the experience and management ability necessary to lead the agency at this important time," Obama said in a written statement. Ref. CNN
Lois Lerner, the IRS official who played a key role in the agency's screening of Tea Party groups for additional scrutiny, will invoke the Fifth Amendment and will not answer questions at a congressional hearing Wednesday, according to a letter sent to the committee Monday by her lawyer. "She has not committed any crime or made any misrepresentation but under the circumstances she has no choice but to take this course," Wrote lawyer William Taylor. Ref. USAToday
The IRS official overseeing the unit that targeted conservative groups has been placed on administrative leave, according to congressional sources in both parties.
Lois Lerner told the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday that she had not broken any laws or agency regulations. She then invoked her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination and declined to answer questions. Ref. CNN
This does not surprise me at all. It seems that all of our government entities are spending more money on stuff that they really do not need to spending money on. I think this is part of the reason why we are so far into debt as a nation. We need to get our spending under control.

Sue Martinek, President of the Coalition for Life of Iowa, explained to the House Ways and Means Committee that her pro-life group "is a grass-roots, low-budget public charity founded in 2004, to provide prayer, education, and related activities about the sanctity of life from conception to death."
