I saw Bruce Almighty on Pay Per View. I really liked the movie. It's not as good as Mask or Liar, Liar but it's loads better than Dumb and Dumber. As for what God would have thought were he watching. Well I think God has a great sense of humor so he would probably be laughing at it. It was in no way disrespectful to God. Basically Bruce is a man who has lost his faith and God goes about restoring it in a very unique way. It sort of answers the question of does God hear our prayers. Now don't get me wrong it is NOT a religious movie. I don't want to ruin the movie for you but from the trailers you know that Bruce gets Gods powers. He finds out that being God is more than just performing miracles and that saying yes to all the prayers is worse than saying nothing. I did not expect to like this movie, my husband talked me into it, but it really won me over. I think that has more to do with Carrey and Morgan Freeman than with the story.

If you guys saw the previews for this movie, then you saw all the funny parts. There are far better Jim Carey movies out there than this one. My favorites of his are 'Liar Liar', 'The Mask' and both Ace Ventura's. You wont miss much if you havent seen 'Bruce Almighty'. |
I only just finished seeing this movie. I had reservations about it making fun of God, but I understand the perspective of what came across. Really, I believe there was not really any intervention from a divine source, I think this was just Bruce going through a nervous breakdown and using real world events to talk him through it. Consider this... his first instance with 'god' was after a car crash, then he seemed to be set straight after a truck hit him.

I liked the movie very much. Just as with the movie, Oh, God!, while God is portrayed as a character in the movie, the movie is really about God changing the person. In this case, He does so by giving the person some divine power, and letting that person deal with the consequences.
Another aspect of the movie is that it portrays some possible reasons why God doesn't always do what we think is "best" for us, right when we ask for it. It shows that there may be unintended consequences that could actually hurt other people or cause them to stumble.
So, I think it is a very well done movie, with a lot of subtle messages stored in it.

I picked up on those points, but I also tried to visualize how this would appear to an agnostic or atheist. Also, was there any special significance behind choosing an African American as 'god'? To me this read as 'whatever you think about him, really does not matter, since it is not the point'.
I think that the way it appears to an atheist or agnostic is exactly the point of the movie. One of the most common skeptical questions about God is why he doesn't make life wonderful for everyone. In this case, a good answer is shown in graphic format, without any preaching involved. I don't know whether or not the director was trying to get this point, or if it just flowed from the story.
As for why portraying God as an African-American, part of it is probably because Morgan Freeman is just so very, very good for the part. Another point might be just to tweak people, make them question their assumptions. Which is always a good thing to do.
Bruce Nolan, a television reporter in Buffalo, N.Y., is discontented with almost everything in life despite his popularity and the love of his girlfriend Grace. At the end of the worst day of his life, Bruce angrily ridicules and rages against God and God responds. God appears in human form and, endowing Bruce with divine powers, challenges Bruce to take on the big job to see if he can do it any better.
