I love science fiction books. I read several different authors, depends on my mood. In my opinion, the best author is Robert A. Heinlein. I loved the books he wrote, especially Rolling Stones. He writes great stories with elements of suspense and comedy. If I was limited to one sci/fi author I would choose Heinlein.
definitely Orson Scott Card. It's amazing how only a year ago I hated Science Fiction, and now, half of what I read is Sci Fi. And it's all thanks to Orson Scott Card.
I always thought Science fiction is all plot and no characters, all battles and machines, and starships. And it is at some books (star trek, for example), in which it is the story that counts, not the author.
It is an important part of good writing to have a good plot, but it's definitely not all. As Card shows, good characters and the natural flow is also important. In Card's books, it is almost as if the characters carry out the plot, and not him. The story flows so well that at the end of the book, you marvel that you actually finished a whole book, because it feels like nothing happened, nothing changed. And that's real. More real than some of the histories that i've read (certainly there's not a lot i've read .)
Card does have some plot books, like the shadow series. But most of his books, mostly enchantment, speaker for the dead, and red prophet are just amazing in the way they flow. For any of you haven't read them yet, What are you waiting for? Edited: Smudge on 26th Oct, 2004 - 12:02am
Anne McCaffrey is my favorite Sci-fi writer, I've read all her books, even those that aren't sci-fi. Card's speaker for the dead is second best. He has allot of character development, and is able to convey a rich plotline without shoving it in your face.
Merry Christmas
I have to agree with Smudge, Orson Scott Card is a genius when it comes to science-fiction novels. I have read Ender's Game at least 5 times and it never grows old. I can only recommend the Ender and the Shadow series
Offtopic but, I heard they are making a movie out of Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow |

Offtopic but, To make you understand how much I loved his writing I tell you this: I couldn't get my hands on all the books in the romanian translation, but I had a friend who's got the hungarian translation of the books I haven't got. At that time I could speak hungarian at a very basic level and in order to read the books I learned hungarian ... it,s not an easy language. |
My favorite SF author (although he doesn't write exclusively in the genre) is Orson Scott Card. Ender's Game captured me like few books have, and Cards ability to create characters that are multi-dimensional and complex sets his work apart from many in the SF genre.
