Stan lee has always been way ahead with his comic book characters, in doing things that people are afraid to do, Storm was one of the first black superheroes if not the first, and a black woman at that! When Spiderman first came out he was told no one would like it because nobody wanted a teenage geeky superhero, you had to be blonde and tanned if you wanted to save the world! So I think it's no coincindence he's one of the first to do an openly gay superhero, gay people can get married now, adopt and pretty much everything else a "normal" person can do so why can't they have superpowers too!
I think that the hype over homosexual characters is at this current time...over-rated. Insofar as I have seen from reading many comics, there is not a flood of such characters, nor have I ever seen any comic that had a gay character in it to be overly sexual or compromising of my standards of reading. Although I have not read any of the stories of the Rawhide Kid, I did read the Alpha Flight series when they brought to light the first mainstream gay character coming out of the closet. That character was Northstar, the mutant speedster of Alpha Flight. The few stories that dealt with Northstar coming out of the closet were done with sensible storytelling......not homosexual makeout scenes. As such I believe them to be nothing more than representative of elements that do exist within our own culture, and as such...viable subjects to be included within the framework of comics geared toward educated readers.
If the way that homosexual characters are handled in stories changes....with lurid affairs and too much emphasis on male/male lusts.....then I would make a stink about it. For now, its all good I guess. I mean, if we can have aliens with 17 eyes and 6 arms in comics, then why banish a gay character from a story about fighting crime?
Btw...I would feel the same if it were lesbian characters. ...**
Really I don't like it. Actually th whole sexual preference thing in comics just makes the action drag. I think they're trying to bring in a different reader and sacrifice the current ones.
