I hardly ever used miniatures when I played and the group just wrote the GM what the party order was on a piece of paper. We numbered the party too so if a random monster attacked us randomly the GM just had to roll the right die to see who was attacked. It worked out great and we all knew where we were.

From what I see here I think you guys are doing a good job of converting a tabletop game to a forum like this. Must be a bit of a task to get what everyone wants to do though cause everyone will see something they read differently.

I have to say from the few months I played of 3.5 in real tabletop and previous AD&D I played and such, I've been impressed with KNtoran and Oliron's utilization of the rules (as much as I can tell) without bogging everything down too much with the actual mechanics in play for the players themselves. I personally think the character stuff is still a bit much for forum games but I lean toward "liter" systems - I think they both "translated" the system well - I didn't play in Testubject's, but I imagine the same.

None of the games my friends and family ever played hardly ever used miniatures though we did use maps occasionally, so while minis I don't feel would necessarily have done a ton to improve things, the (forum policy) lack of even a vague visual representation of locales does present some unnecessary difficulties in this forum.

That is one of the things I try to take into consideration when posting. It can be a bit of a benefit if used properly. Sometimes by leaving a description vague, the players will imagine their own world and not be confined by someone elses words describing it.

I find that players run into confusions and misunderstandings of games no matter what the form. That is part of playing the game, testing the parameters and learning how it ticks.

Most players get bored of reading text after a paragraph or so. So that being what it is leaving things to the point and giving vital information that questions can be asked off of is the key. I also like to try and paint a little bit of life of the environment in with the information, so that the players don't feel like they are in a stale, non living place.

The key for me I think is having the players try and peel apart what you have given them without making it a task. I try to have many layers of things going on in the post and that also helps breathe more life into the text.

Works It Post Play Dragons and Dungeons

The trick of any on line game especially one that is play by post like we are playing here is to allow the characters time to develope and change as they get more and more experience. Allowing the player of the characters to use their imagination and fill in the scene as their character goes about life in the world they find themselves. I can post a long post everytime I added something to make the scene all my own but I like to try to keep it brief at times unless something important is happening that can effect the outcome of the game and the possible reaction of the party members.

Its not like just being to play D&D it in a post style like this but its the awesome moderation they have here. You don't have to worry about all the idiots that try to flame and just be stupid. I've been on some other sites and they're just plain out mean.

Comments: The cool thing about your setup is the customized look of the posts. We DnD on our phpBB forum but it doesn't change from the original style of the rest of the site so its kind of generic. We upload our own custom avatars so that helps but it will be so cool if w could convince the admin to do something like you have here showing the stats and stuff but I ain't going to hold my breath. rolleyes.gif
