Daniel Ortega, the revolutionary Marxist who battled a U.S.-backed Contra insurgency in the 1980s, was closing in on Nicaragua's presidency, appearing Monday to have defeated four opponents with promises that he was a changed man.

Nicaragua invites Russia to help build canal between Atlantic, Pacific Oceans

"The Nicaraguan side asked the Russian side to participate in the construction of the canal running across Nicaragua and linking the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans," a Transport Ministry spokesman said. According to an expert assessment, the project will costs 18 billion U.S. Dollars. Ref. Source 1
