What is your strategy for confronting the fantasy creature Medusa in Dungeons & Dragons?

I've found killing Medusa successfully, depends on the dice. Thier petrification on sight thing really makes it tough to actually hit them. Unless you take the save vrs. Petrification chance.

Also when you came upon them, was the party aware. How many were petrified in the first round?

The one time I've ever fought Medusa I was scouting with my familiar. I was petrified threw my familiar's eyes before the battle even started.
