I understand that in some countries, women who work and become pregnant are not entitled to paid maternity leave. |
Living in Trinidad, what can I say. Well I lived there from August to November last year. What a beautiful island it is. So picturesque. But that is where it ends. I have never felt so unsafe in all my life. I had to get out and the safest I felt was on the plane home. I am not a local and obviously I don't look local, the comments I got on a daily basis were lewd and disgusting. As far as I can see there is NO respect for women in T&T, at least not for certain women. Not everyone can be tarred with the same brush I might add and I did make some friends, but a lot of T&T people I met were rude, insulting and downright racist. I went to T&T with the hope of starting a new life with my husband and working with a company in training staff. What a joke. I couldnt go to the shop on my own becuase it wasnt safe to drive to the mall. I couldnt open my window of the car and if I left the estate where we lived without locking my car door, I was in danger. I gave up on T&T after experiencing crime in the worst form. I was mugged at gunpoint on a beach with two friends. I had a gun shoved in my face and the two men threatened to rape me. Only the fact that I fought back so strongly did they not do anything. It is a great pity and shame. I will NEVER be the same after that incident and it still effects me today and I am thousands of miles from T&T. I would have given my all to the island, but what I had was thrown in my face by Trini's. I dont know how the island is going to get to 1st world status by 2020 if the attitude of the local people doesnt change.
I can honestly say if anyone came to me and asked will I move to T&T I would have to say no. And if you do be it at the risk of your life. I do NOT say this lightly. All of my expat friends have experienced crime while in T&T. This is NOT normal for where I come from. Yes I read the post about NY and the crime there, but the crime is somewhat controlled in NY and tourist or expats are NOT made to feel like dirt on the shoe of the locals. I would not in my wildest mind walk down Fredericks Street to Independents Square after dark, actually not even in daylight would I do it, why? because I know I will be a victim of some sort of crime.
Agonvea, thanks for that post. It makes me realize that I am not the only one "crazy" here thinking that living in Trinidad is a nightmare! I am also a foreigner and even though I did not experience crime in the terrible way you did, I live inside my home like if I was in a prison. It is NOT safe anywhere these days.
Unfortunately, some of us are "stuck" and have no other place to go for one reason or another so I am happy you was able to move out from T&T and wish you a speedy recovery from that terrible and traumatic episode you lived. Feel free to reply to other threads we have.
Sorry for what you went through and I agree 100% about what you said, and just imagine I'm a local (by birth only). As someone that has traveled abroad (thus knowing the better life) and having seen crime in action amongst the people here via the news and a few personal experiences I can say that living here is a survival thing, I do not enjoy it and will not recommend it for anyone else.
Where is the love for our T&T?
It is really disgusting the way people treat our home, Trinidad and Tobago-a land that is supposedly beautiful and filled with friendly and caring citizens. This I have no doubt about, and I ask myself: where is the love? Nobody cares about anything anymore. So what if I eat something and throw the wrapper outside my vehicle because I refuse to dirty my car? Or who cares if I walk the streets and drop my snack paper on the ground? Ref. Source 7
That's because people just do not care about the country. If they do, they won't do any of those things. Funny enough, they claim they are patriots or Trinis to the bone, just because they wave a Trini flag in a soca warrior game or during Carnival. Fools.

Yes you are right some Trini's dont seem to care about how their own country is perceived. |
