![How Good is Trinidad & Tobago to Live? How Good is Trinidad & Tobago to Live?](/board/YaBBImages/icons/pencil.gif)
Hi LDS_Forever,
I have read quite a lot about your posts. Hope you can help me.
I have been offered a job at a hospital in Trinidad.
I want to come down there with my wife.
Reading about all this crime situation makes me a bit hesitant.
Can you give me some idea about the current situation in T&T as regards to a young couple with no kids.
I would be very helpful for any info.
Anybody else reading this post please do answer if you think it can give me some guidance.
Thanks in advance.
Surgerydoc01, I assume you are a doctor (based on your username). If you are, I also assume that the salary you will be getting is quite good. If that's the case and you have no kids, I think you can well afford some of the nicest neighborhoods in the country that happen to be also some of the safest.
Keep in mind that safety is NOT guaranteed but of course, you can minimize the safety concern by living in certain areas such as Westmoorings, Goodwood Park and Bayshore. My top favorite being Westmoorings and Goodwood Park.
They're very pricey regardless of the size and whether we're talking about apartments or houses but these areas usually have private security, etc.
We have a thread about Westmoorings here:

Hi LDS_Forever,
Thanks for your quick reply.
I am not looking for a affluent place to live in.Just a regular society building or apartment which has some level of security.
can you give me some idea of the security situation there and also regarding the average cost of living, rent, shopping.
We are not a partying sort of couple. We prefer to stay at home and maybe go out once or twice a month.
We could be there for a couple of years.
regards,
Hi LDS_Forever,
Sorry for the late reply.
I wish to inform you that I have been offered the job. The salary offered id 29500TT$/pm.
Can you give me some idea regarding the following:
1. Taxation on this salary?
2.cost of living for two persons.
3.medical insurance for family.
4.I found out about housing..the range is from 3000TT to 5000TT.
Hope I am not bothering you too much.
Any info can be very helpful.
Thanks again,
Regards,

Comments: Hi, you mentioned that you are relocating to Trinidad and earning 29500 a month? well our income tax here is 25% of that, you will also be paying a health surcharge of around 50tt a month and NIS of around 400tt a month. In addition you will be paying 15% VAT (value added tax) on everything that you purchase, including utilities and food. 3000-5000tt is not going to get you a place that is comfortable with fair security. You will need to budget about 1500US for that at least if you want a sort of US middle class type apartment. Renting a house will cost much more. Purchasing a car is expensive, although gas is cheap, if you wish to buy a new car it costs around 150,000tt and up. Crime is rampant everywhere, so the best areas, the safest areas are in western Trinidad, I.e Goodwood, Westmoorings, Moka, Fairways. You should not go out at night, especially alone because criminals lurk the streets, and they don't just injure you and steal, they usually kill you first and then steal. Honestly, I have lived here a very long time and moving here is not a good idea, especially if you are coming from a developed country, because in addition to crime, and high cost of living, the people are generally very ignorant and aggressive, there is complete lawlessness, it is dirty and highly polluted, there is absolutely no customer service whatsoever, no sort of health care system and even the private health care is not very good, quite backwards, and you will wait a full 6-8 hours just to get your drivers licsence. Good luck!
Hi JoePublic,
Thanks for your reply.
I had some info from LDS_Forever also regarding the living conditions there.
I found out some affordable housing near UWI...range 5000-7500TT/month.
Thanks also for the info on tax and health insurance.
I will try to touch base again with you before I make the actual move.
Regards,
