Mormon Definition of Martyr

WHat do you feel is the Mormon Definition of Martyr and should we expect to see modern day Martyrs? Since the time of Joseph Smith and into the late century has there been any Mormon Martyrs for the cause?

I think the Mormon definition of a martyr is someone who died or suffered a lot for the sake of the church you know what am I saying? The last one I can think of is Joseph Smith and maybe a couple few of the early brethren. In modern times and generally speaking no way!

Martyr is one willing to die for a cause. Now thats kind of the key is willing. That doesn't mean somebody actually has to die, but is willing to die.

We aren't in the old west anymore. We don't have some stand off in the park. Willingness to give our all is still there (or should be). Even if its just the pioneers crossing the plans because they want to practice there religion. If its standing up for what we know is right even when the rest of the world (and celebrities) say its not.

I don't think the die is what is need. I think its the willingness to give it all!

Martyrs Martyr Definition Mormon

Anyone murdered in the service of the church I believe can be defined as a martyr giving their life for the furtherance of the Lord's kingdom on the earth. Since Joseph Smith there have been several others:

Parley P Pratt was killed in Arkansas on a mission. Missionaries sent to the southern states mission through the turn of the last century saw missionaries killed. In the early 1990's two missionaries were killed in Bolivia, and President Monson spoke at one funeral stating the missionary hadn't been released from his mission, and continued his work in the spirit world. Just a few years ago two Elders were shot in Virginia, one from Bountiful, UT was killed.

The list goes on, but those in the service of the master are sometimes killed in the "line of duty" to the Lord. My guess is there will be many more before his return.

Dying for a cause makes you a martyr. In our lingo being a martyr means giving up your life for the gospel. There have been murders and abuse of missionaries over the years. I see them as martyrs too.
