The flooding in Diego Martin, Petit Valley and Glenco has been a disaster in the early morning of 11 August 2012. Two people died and the PM declared Diego Martin a disaster area. Drainage in Trinidad is terrible and with people building their home in the mountains more needs to be done infrastructure wise to cater for where all that rolling water goes.
The Diego Martin highway is closed and all traffic is being diverted to Petit Valley and Diego Martin main roads and this is causing stifling traffic in and out of the area. Even Hi-Lo was packed on Sunday with people shopping like they have not eaten in weeks. Some parts of the roads have open craters like a meteor shower hit and there is mud everywhere!
For anyone wanting to volunteer their help for the clean up in the West or make a complaint about the lack of help they can call 511. It could be that the mention of a holiday ( see Source 1 ) also will help the people in the West because many vehicles have been lost to the flood waters. The Diego Martin Central community centre has been set up to help people that have become homeless and it is being protected by the defense force in case anyone is worried about being victimized there.
There were floods again today bringing back a lot of the mud that workers have been trying to take out of homes. It is a holiday today because of the Olympic celebrations but I wonder... Didn't making today a holiday sort of slow down the number of people mobilized to help the people in Diego Martin? Most of the victims from this natural disaster complained about the lack of help especially those not in the flat lands.
The tail end of that storm did so much flooding all over Trinidad. The drainage situation in this country needs to be seriously addressed right away. No talking about what you plan to do but instead get workmen out there and do it!
