While traveling I heard a call-in radio show where the radio presenters and the parents were for bringing back corporal punishment in school as a solution to violence among school children. Then people wonder why this country is so backwards. Most of the violence committed among children is because of poor parenting or the lack of it. Many of the children in Trinidad who are prone to violence and / or delinquency have roots in violent / abusive homes or neglect. What is needed is more social workers WHO CARE and counselors that can help these children. It is one thing to see the sad state of our society but quite another to hear radio announcers talking utter crap. Imagine one parent called in and said they had a problem with corporal punishment not because of the 'licks' but because some teachers take their stress out on the children when beating them - you think? This parent wants a separation of a violent act with that of a tender one while having a teacher 'discipline' YOUR child? Teachers teach - as the parent it is your responsibility to assess your child's needs and deal with it at home long before they get to school.
I find that this whole belief system that spanking one's child is bad is quite inane and Trinidadians have been to the United States or Canada and have seen the disadvantages of banning corporal punishment. Imagine a child is misbehaving and you can give them a good belt! To boot they are living off of the money YOU are earning. I find that it is of utmost disregard to the parent to ban corporal punishment with imprisonment for doing what humanity has been doing for thousands of years!

Comments: Its not about taking away discipline from parents but instead outlining what is not accepted. There are parents in this country that aren't afriad to take up a piece of 2x4 on their children and that is abuse
I was absolutely disgusted by these news and more disgusted at the people who supported such abuse, there is something really wrong with our society that believes this is a normal form of punishment and the same STUPID, IDIOTIC, IGNORANT people are shocked and surprised when their children turn violent. Can't you see FOOLS that YOU are the SOLE responsible for such outcome?
On the Beyond the Tape TV6 program inspector Alexander said that the mother featured in the latest video went to the Mova police station with an attorney. It seems like they are also enrolling the boy in the Police Youth Group. There doesn't seem to be any charges laid at the moment.
