Autism & Common Sense

Autism & Common Sense

In my experience with Autism you are shown just how important common sense is in day to day living. Unfortunately, a person diagnosed with Autism may not have an awareness of 'common sense' because they see the world differently or their brain simply does not acknowledge the 'right' thing to do at the 'right' time. For this Thread I will like to know what you do to help someone with Autism become attuned to what should be common sense by using common place routines. For instance, it should be common sense that after using the toilet you wash your hands, however what if the person does not do that and has to be constantly reminded and their response is "Oh yeah...".

Social stories, role playing and set visual examples through repetition will make the autistic child to learn some of these things until it is fully assimilated and digested. Just like a routine.

I do wonder if there is an average time or if it just varies on an individual basis because after years of role-play and teaching you would think certain basic things should be routine by now.

There is not a set time. It all depends on the child natural personality hence there are behavioral therapists that deal exclusively with these things in autistic kids.
