The typical Trinidad employer

Have any of you had an employer that was really nice? I have found it very hard to work a 9-5 job in TT when they treat you like a 'slave' and talk to you like a 'servant'.

What is more amazing is they payt you next to nothing and act as though you are getting $100 an hour.

Employers do not realize that if you treat employees as if they are 'clients' of your business and not just workers then you will get them to produce output that will make any establishment excel because they will look after the interests of the employer in all honesty.

Employers are terrible everywhere.

When I worked in radio stations I always have a nagging employer who never is satisfied with what you do. They don't pay you nothing and they want you to do everything, and usually more than what you're supposed to do. For that reason, when my time at the radio finished, I usually leave very quickly so they don't have me doing this or doing that for a favor...

Had one boss that say I did not and used to come in on my own ahead of everybody else to do major backups and print jobs....so they can used the computer by a 9:30 otherwise if I came inside normal time they not getting the computer till at at least 10:30 and we get off on that.....plus finished my work too fast and she say she don't see me doing nothing...ended up quiting and I founded out that the other two people left two months later after me because of the same boss...

on a side note she didn't want me to talking to a co-worker upstairs and we all work for de same company and she was de only one inside the office upstairs and had problems wid the computers...and was de computer tech figure that one out .she also left.

I had couple employers in T & T and the ones that stand out most to me is a couple that I used to work with in Marabella they were the best we get along perfectly and I wasn't treated as an employee I was treated like a family member involved in everything was so trusted that they use to go out of the country all the time and leave me in the house with their little son we had a great relationship I shouldn't say had I will say have because we have remained friends to this day as a matter of fact I sopke to the wife on Saturday evening and every time I go home I visit them.

They were the best employer I ever had. Yes I had some that treat me like I was their slave but I let them know that I deserve respect just like they do and you have to give to get.

I have found that people in Trinidad really do not know how to talk with one another let alone to a subordinate. They cannot handle even the smallest of 'power' in supervising or managing. Pride hits them the moment they have a 'title' of leadership.

I have found that this is the result of the uneducated masses not willing to stand up for their rights. I see people being treated like a dog quite literally and all they do is say nothing. Perhaps this is the way they have been brought up, but it is not right.

I don't think that any boss who is going to A) treat their employer like a slave, and pay them a pittance for doing so, is ever going to gain respect from their employee.

It makes common sense to treat your employee how you would wish to be treated yourself, and in return, you can bet that they will not rip off your business to the same extent as someone who is treated badly by their employers.

I was wondering when I read this topic, how the commercial side of T&T manages to exist, as it appears that nobody sticks to their jobs, and there must be a massive staff turnover due to this. It can't be a good sign for the country, in my opinion.

I am not sure if there is any such thing as a "nice" employer. People these days are under a lot of stress and they believe that the best way to deal with it would be to take it out on an employee. I have seen many people who have quietly endured "slave-like" treatment and the reasons why they tolerate it, I have been told, were because they were the sole breadwinner in the family and also, they feared that they might lose their job for standing up to the boss!

I remember when I worked for a male manager (in a large financial company) whom I considered to be so warm and caring. Later on, I learnt that he was devious, callous and untrustworthy. He exploited my willingness to work and to the end, spoke very rudely to me when he located another employee, who knew how to "flirt" with the senior management. Sad but true!
