Virtual Table Top RPG
I was recently looking at interfaces that allow Virtual Table Top RPGing online. Basically the GM will download and install one program on his computer and the players do the same for their PCs save that their install is a lite version of the GMs.
Then when everyone is installed the GM connects to the net via the program and so do the players (obviously the time will be planned in advance) and they are shown an interface with dice, characters and chat interface so they can play as though they were all together.
Advantages
1. The nice thing about this is bringing people from all over the world together
2. You can have visual creations right in front of you to play
3. The dice (in some interfaces) is just like the real thing
4. It is like being in a chat room specifically for RPGs
5. You can create your own characters on your PC, no wasting time there
6. There is a free version, but the interface is not as nice as the paid for ones
Disadvantages
1. It is not cheap - the GMs interface is the most expensive program
2. The players also have to pay for and download the program
3. I have read troubles for connecting / program malfunctions, etc
4. Everyone lives in a different time zone and may not make it to play
Now there are some popular names in this type of RPGing and there are separate Threads for each. This Thread only deals with it in GENERAL.
Next, Would You Buy?
I was thinking, if I were to invest in such a program would you buy in and play? See some of the Threads about Virtual Table Top RPGing here and check it out.
This Verses Text RPGing
Despite the cool interface and what not I still like regular Text RPGing, because it allows everyone to operate on their time whereas you have to meet for this one, but I would still have it as an option if there were enough people interested.
Virtual Table Top Rpg (Hover)
Well I don't know if this piece of software does the same as that Virtual Table Top RPG, but I found a program called OpenRPG. One of the interesting features it's that it is completely free.
I haven't tested it tough.
I think what you will pay for here is the top class graphics (if you go with the ones for purchase), but in another Thread I do mention another one that I found for free in addition to which there were other plugins also for free. Check for it.
Every time a group of mine has attempted to use a free online table top rpg program it has turned out poorly. Usually due to someone getting booted because of certain firewalls or what not. Actually installing a program might fix that though, but I wouldn't want to pay for it. I'd much rather simply meet and play.
That would be so cool and I might actually invest in it but the only thing I don't like is having to dedicate time strictly to it unless it was done like in sessions or something.
Cool that makes two of us. Maybe the admin / DM should look at doing this.
