What is your strategy for confronting the animal Bear, Black in Dungeons & Dragons?

A very well rounded forest animal. It can swim very well and has great speed. It's low AC / HP and limited number per encounter diminish it's strength greatly.

For a GM this is a good Brute / Soldier monster to use in combat. Throw in a handful of archers with cover and your party is in trouble.

Never disturb the lair of a bear. This is one thought when you come up on a cave and think its just the next adventure when what its really the bear sleeping or worst the bear with cubs.
