Oliron's Play By Post AD&D Dark Calling Game

This thread is were the GM will post what is going on in the game. Also the Party Leader will post here the actions of the party. As this is the first post I will give a background and set up the scene for the players to begin on.

The PC's will start out in a small town known as Klagek protected by large stone walls. They would know one another in some way, some sort of background story connecting their childhoods. For example: Joe knows Tom because they go to the same school. Tom knows Jenny because they are cousins. Thus Joe knows of Jenny threw Tom.

A river a short distance to the west provides trade, food, ect... Farmers and woodsfolk live just outside of town. Run down roads lead North, East, and South. Traders trickle in and out of town threw these roads, mostly to and from the east. A little more than 50 miles to the east lies a dwarven city among a mountain range.

The PC's start in a tavern known as the Lucky Sprite, sitting around a table. Soon tales begin to circulate of similar nightmares that have been reoccurring threw town. A few of the more common ones being that of a child being swallowed by a devil, the child's cries can be heard coming from within its belly. Others see the image of a book being written in by a devil, all around cries of pain and agony can be heard.

A well known old wizard recently died upon waking, jotting down a cryptic note about a devil and a door before passing on. This has most recently caused a fever of paranoia in the walled town. Things are beginning to become strained in town and the PC's must act or watch their town go mad around them.

The town's walls are two parallel barriers of stone block with a few feet of fill between them it stands some 20 feet tall with every hundred yards a small tower. Sentries patrol the town and its walls regularly. There is a North, East, South, and West gate which are kept shut at night. The town Klagek is mostly inhabited 70% by Humans, 20% by Dwarves, and 10% by Halflings. The town is governed by a council of elders. Some townsfolk complain that the government is corrupt.

There are several Inns, Taverns, Temples, and General Trade Houses. There is a Keep made of marble in the Southwest that the elders have occupied. In about the middle of town a tower stands some 40 feet. A wizard used to live here but has recently died.

To the West past the river are hills and a small forest. A bridge used to cross the river but was destroyed about 2 years prior by Orcs. Huge stone piers remain of the bridge and plans are being made to rebuild it. For now only a ferry can get you across. Fey creatures live among the hills to the west and south. The small forest is misleadingly called Bright Woods, it is seldom entered due to being inhabited by Wraiths.

A swamp exists further south past the hills. A Fort here attempts to protect boats traveling down the river from Klagek. Though Lizardfolk have been been becoming more brazen in their dealings with the Fort.

To the east lies mostly plains and of course the road leading to a Dwarven city. To the North and East is were most all the farmers live. Further North is another forest of medium size. Goblins are active here and at times will raid farmers homes.

"Typical brute" mumbles the Barmaid under her breath as she sweeps out the dirt, kicking dust into the air and out the door. A cool breeze wafts in rushing over the patrons, being even more refreshing as it evaporates the moisture on the skin. A smell of old magic hangs about in the air telling the senses stories of old. A guitar is being strummed to a light folky tune by an old man next to the tavern fireplace. The embers in the fire seem to flicker and dance while they warm his old bones. Laughter erupts from some unknown location every so often followed by a cheer or choir of chuckles. The sun is just beginning to set on the Lucky Sprite, about three more hours until nightfall.

You cannot help but overhear a conversation at the table across from you.
A raggedy man with about six and a half teeth whispers to his companion who is chugging ale, getting most of it down his gullet. "Didsh you hear,"
one of his eyes begins blinking then stops
"Nargoz ish dead." Then takes a long gulp of his own ale.

The other man burping a grizzled note looks over at his friend, "Whaat, Ol' Fish Eye?" his lips smacking as if he is trying to taste something but can't remember what it was.

"Yesh" the first replies, leaning forward "he died of the nightmaresh" he whispers loudly, trying to sound scarry. However sounding more crazy than frightening.

His friend looks afraid but says nothing, staring strait ahead, his eyes glazed, wobbling a bit.

The other man continues his tale, "Grumar found a letter nexsh to him an.. An.. And, it said the Devils are coming for ush." The man looks about getting a bit more sober.
"It said Tobolar stole a book from him that the devilsh needed." His eyes get bigger, "no one hash seen Tobolar sensh Fish Eye died." The few toothed man jabs his finger down onto the table poking it several times briskly.

The men look at each other with a look of fear and dread for a bit then order more ale.

The barmaid deftly emerges from a group of men near the bar. She is carrying a number drinks, balancing them on top an oversized wooden plate with one hand. Meandering from table to table she slows enough to speak into Sir Valdien's ear.

"Don't pay any heed to these old bumpkins." "They are always sputtering doom and gloom."

Moving on she arrives at Lwenteno's table, she plunks down two ales. "Sorry for the wait love, that'll be one silver." She has an angelic face that holds a patient smile.

-------

The two old men don't seem to notice, or are ignoring Sir Valdien at first. While waiting for recognition you realize where the smell of old magic was coming from and there is nothing magical about it. Upon them hearing you mention Heironeous the men turn and look at you. Being that they have drank their weight in ale, information falls out of them without any regard for actual truth or fear of repercussions.

They tell you about Nargoz (aka Ol' Fish Eye) being the last powerful Wizard in the land. Every other mage being worms compared to him. Nargoz apparently was here over 3000 or 300 years ago (they can't remember) and was the founder of Klagek, also he has the eyes of a fish.

Tobolar was Nargoz's apprentice, a halfling of young age, and has stolen a rare magical book. This book according to Nargoz's note, is a needed component in some horrible ritual that opens a gate to Hell. Furthermore, the two men believe that the town is under some kind of curse. Causing townsfolk to have similar nightmares night after night. Lastly they hint Grumar, the local Heironeous cleric, might know more about the situation.

Upon finishing their tale the two men realize they are near death due to poisoning and stumble out of the Lucky Sprite. Using each other in some strange balancing act that oddly seems to work. They artfully miss crashing into anything or anyone.

The barmaid brings two plates of a smoked local fish called Nog (similar to channelcats, aka huge cat fish). Along with two more ales.

"On the house boys." She flashes a big grin, then returns to the kitchen.

The bartender only shrugs, " Those two always have some strange tale." "Though it's true Nargoz died this morning and Tobolar is a wanted halfling since."

"If your looking for a real problem to solve look North." "Goblins there have been giving farmers a rough time of late."

The bartender then goes about tending the bar.

It is dusk now and about 2 hours until night.

Upon your inquiry to the free meal the bartender shrugs and replies, "Hospitality, plus the 2 silver your friend plopped down there was enough to cover it." He looks concerned at the young man Sir Valdien, as a father might look at his son. The bartenders expression follows along well defined wrinkles. A look he no doubt has used many times on countless patrons.

The bartender looks at Lwenteno, recognizing a local from his garb and mannerism. Also Lwenteno seemed strikingly familiar in appearance to a young man he had fought with many, many years before. Maybe it was just his head making up wishful thoughts.

"You boys should head to an inn and get a good nights rest." "The Bear Moon Inn is a fine place, rates are a bit steep but its worth it." "Just follow the road North till you reach the North Gate and it will be on your left." "Tell them Barath sent you." Barath the Bartender hears someone calling him from the other end of the bar and moves off to serve them, holding up his hand, palm showing, fingers stretched out, to symbolize a hasty goodbye.

When the party reaches the North Gate you see to the left a stone building that must be the right place. There is a sign out front with the image of a large bear roaring at the moon. As you both enter explaining your desires for rooms, the Inn keeper nods recognizing Barath's name, then requests a single gold coin from each of you.

Looking around the place as you walk up to your rooms for the night, you see a common room off from the stairs. This room is comfortably decorated with a few leather sofas around a well maintained fireplace. On the sofas sit three well dressed men discussing the price of different cheeses.

As you both enter your private rooms you see a nice bed, a recess in the wall holds a rather new candle, a jug with fresh water, and a covered chamber pot in the corner. A single barred window allows a decent view of the west town wall and several nice houses. You see two guards walking along side each other on top of the wall, silently patrolling the area.

You both wake in the mourning very well rested. As you leave the Inn on your way to question Grumar you see the sky is clear. It looks like it is going to be a nice day. A farmer and his beasts of burden are entering from the north gate with a large wagon of hay. Other townsfolk directly across the street from the Inn are trading various items and haggling with one another. You remember passing the Temple to Heironeous last night and walk a short distance south arriving at its open doors.

An old dwarf dressed in Heironeous Priest garbs steps out from the doors, swiftly walking up to the two of you.

"Please, quickly, come inside." "We must speak in private." The priest hurries back into the temple. Once you are both inside he shuts the doors and chants a quick spell. Suddenly you are unable to hear all of the towns outside noises.

"I am Grumar, Heironeous Cleric." "I apologize for the strange circumstances you are now in but I must be on my guard." "The devils are moving quicker than anticipated." "Last night a small group of Imps attempted to breach Nargoz's tower." Grumar holds up his hand and motions it to call someone over to him while still looking ahead. From behind him a small boy dressed in a thick ratty cloak scampers out and up to his side, looking at the Grumar first, then the party.

"This is Naylen, apprentice Heironeous cleric, he must be taken North." "Past Shaderoot Forest, there are the ruins of the village Jorine." "Within this village is a ruined Temple of Heironeous, this is were he must be taken." "Please, I trust you and ask this of you in Heironeous's name." "There is not much time, the Devils are gathering like a festering wound." "If you have question you must ask, please, ask them now." "Once you leave this temple you must not speak Naylen's name or anything to do with this task." Grumar waits impatient and paranoid for the parties questions.
