Lwentano throws his torch at the owlbear. It bounces off of the creatures feathered body and lays burning on the ground. The light in the cave then dances almost magically as the two fight it out. The half elf moves forward and strikes quickly at the beast. His sword penetrates its feathered hide, landing a brutal strike.

The owlbear then swipes at Lwentano before he can bring up his shield up. (7 damage)

Lwentano hits again landing another strong cleaving blow.

The owlbear's claws tear across his shield, it misses landing a damaging hit.

Lwentano responds, hitting yet again with his sword. The owlbear screeches in pain becoming furious. The beast charges forward and attempts to overrun and tackle Lwentano, it misses.

Lwentano sees an opportunity for an easy strike and takes it. He hits again showing no mercy to his battle frenzied opponent.

The owlbear's feathers ruffle and shake. The creature spins around furiously, claws out. It moves quicker than Lwentano can imagine and he is hit before he knows it. (6 damage)

Lwentano bloodied and battered, showing more than a few gruesome claw wounds, somehow manages to thrust his blade forth once more finding his target. The owlbear crumples down next to him taking a few more short breathes before dying.

Cliff slumps into the chair the barmaid directed him, relieved to have found a chance at a drink of potable water. Toady, his toad, sticks his head out of Cliff's tunic and croaks joyfully. Cliff pushes him back down with two fingers on the toad's head.

"Calm down, you. I wasn't actually going to lick you. I know your skin isn't as moist as it looks."

He stares blankly at the barmaid as she comes to the table, attempting to fidget as little as possible. He was used to people giving him strange looks, but she smiles indifferently as she takes his order for a glass of water.

"You're not from around here," she states.

"Nope."

"Are you staying long?"

"I am not sure. Is there a place for me here?" he asks earnestly. He stares into the waitress' eyes, which had started wandering around the tavern.

"I don't...what?" she asks.

"Is there anybody who needs me here? I can do many things. Help till the land, or clean your tavern. I would love a reason to belong here. I've traveled around a bit, and I am a very quick learner."

The barmaid smiles widely, "I'm not really sure sweetheart, if you need anything else let me know.", she then leaves like a gust of wind.

Another gust of wind comes your way. This one however does not smell sweet or feel refreshing. The air feels cooler, fouler, darker. A spindly middle aged man drifts over and sits down in the chair next to you. He is wearing simple travel clothes and is covered in burn marks.
"I overheard you are looking for work. I know a guy who knows a guy that is looking for carriers.", His face holds a peculiar look.
"Thing's have been rough on the roads around here and I heard he is looking for capable men. Names Zar by the way.", he extends his hand for a shake while cracking half a grin.

The tavern is occupied by only a handful of townsfolk. They are deep in thought or something along those lines and don't seem to be noticing too much around themselves.

Cliff eagerly grabs Zar's hand and gives it a light wiggle, like double checking a locked doorknob.

"I've been able to handle myself out in the wilderness thus far," Cliff says. "How well does this job pay?"

"Oh very well, near 100gp sometimes for a weeks trip. Meet up at the east gate after breakfast tomorrow.", Zar replies happily.

Zar moves suddenly leaving, stopping at the tavern door briefly to say, "At the east gate, early tomorrow, see you then.", he is gone.

Cliff asks the barmaid for more water, to fill his water skin. He offers to help clean the place a little in payment for the service he received, and if that work is refused, he is prepared to leave a promissory note. He then finds a cul de sac to sleep for the night, and if he is left untroubled, arrives at the east gate by dawn.

The waitress directs Cliff to the bartender to fill his flask. You follow her direction and see a gruff looking man behind the bar with one red eye. He introduces himself as Barath.

Barath the Bartender fills the flask with water while adding, "I saw you talking with slim ova there. Ya know there are better things round here to get into. I don't mean to tell ya what to do but that guys bad news."

Your sleep goes well and is uninterrupted, though not completely satisfying. The sun is up and morning is upon you. Arriving at the east gate you see a caravan being set up for departure.

They have not seen you yet and you still have time to back out if you so wish.

Cliff walks up to the caravan and loudly greets the entirely group. "I heard you were looking for carriers, or escorts, or something. I can definitely help out."
