If its not nailed down Aive is taking it! and then the nails that hold the rest down.
But on a serious note Aive will search throughly for traps and any more valuables
18 search
Detect magic would be handy before anyone proceeds to much further, Aive might ask Myranni if she senses anything magical.
Then Aive will be looking in the book (hoping its a spell book) then checking out the round ball like thing,
Also if the clothes are nice once all is done and checked Aive might make a few minor swaps.

Valdalen will help look through the room as best as possible, though not knowing if there is anything in particular to be looking for, and thinking it strange that clothes would be folded into a bed.
"Just this one person, sat here in this room, studying all on this own, to come out and harry interlopers, apparently independent of any other help. A very strange setup." says the Paladin, picking up miscellaneous items, examining them as though understanding what they're for, then putting them back down.
Finally Sir Valdalen coughs again and slams down some metal trinket onto the desk. "How does this get us any closer to our people? Or the goblins or our so-called guide that has taken a powder? We skulk around in some anti-social wizardling's basement while who knows what is happening to our own, somewhere, maybe close by! Newt eyes and crystal balls and mildewed books aren't freeing their bonds or striking blows against the shades and bird things!"
The girl blames none of the party but is frustrated at the bottlenecks the party seems to keep encountering, and her own lack of knowledge of what to do, and also being stuck in the dark, in a tight space, practically underground. She imagined a lot of scenarios in her youth, of what it would be like to be an adventuring paladin of Heironeous, a knight errant, righting wrongs and saving innocents from harm, but trudging blindly around in a dank cave with rats gnawing on her shins was not one that occurred to her - it just didn't seem like something that would ever be likely to come up.
SA: She stops and tries to gather her thoughts, then thinks better of it and concentrates, and tries to sense Evil in any significant amount, in any particular direction.

Myrrani places a hand gently on the Paladin's shoulder.
"This may be more important than we realize. It seemed strange that devils should pick some random backwater town to terrorize, but what if this magician summoned them here? His notes may include some way to be rid of them, and in doing so bring us that much closer to freeing the captives."
While everyone is looking about the room Lwentano will actively search for any secret or hidden doors or passageways. IF he does not find any he will take up a post where he can cover the entrance they came in with bow to make sure nothing comes in while we are searching.
OOC: Sorry all
Thought I had already posted but think it was a case of I thought about what I wanted to write but never actually posted.
IC: Philo circles around the room, casually searching for anything out of the ordinary (secret panels, doors, etc) while looking at what is there and pocketing those items that may have some value.
He flips through the papers momentarily unless something relevant jumps out at him, in which case he will pause to read it.

After glancing through the papers and realizing they need translated, Philo suggests we take them, make several copies of the cheat sheet and split the papers among the group for translation in a safer environment - at camp or back in town. We can cut the translation time down to 4 or 5 hours if we all decode part of it and then put it all back together and read through it.
"Does anyone want to go back and explore the south tunnel or check out what's below us," he asks as he begins to bundle the papers together.
He will also take the pen, ink, and blank parchment to use in making copies of the code.
OOC: just a thought but I think checking out the south tunnel before descending the ladder is the smart choice - I"d hate to leave something dangerous behind us that we might have to fight past in a less-than-healthy state on the way out.
I agree on the south tunnel and It's really gonna suck if the book translates into don't go down the south tunnel unless you want to die....
