I read in another forum that the Church started (in some areas) to develop a new Temple Recommend. It is similar to the older one with the exception that it has a bar code on it. Basically, when you are ready to have your interview you go to the Bishop who issues a new one and sign it with the current expiration date. Then your Stake President does the same and activate the new recommend through a bar code reader. The Temple will have all the information within 24hs.
I wonder if anyone saw the New Temple Recommend or heard about it. What are your thoughts about the "new" system?
We received the directive this week in Sacrament meeting that within the next three months we would have to get a new temple recommend with the bar code.
I believe there are particular reasons for this change, especially in our area of Southern Arizona.
1. I believe that it helps determine where to build new temples. Because the Bar Codes will have Stake information and possibly member information the church can track were the need for new temples is.
We would have stake temple days where many individuals would come. There was no way, however, to track the numbers of individuals from our stake coming to the temple. The workers just look at the recommend and pass you through.
I think that his is wonderful. I believe we are at a point in the Church's history that temples will be much more accessible to the members and there needs to be a way to determine the location of future temples.
2. It is possibly a security issue. The recommends as is are not that hard to copy(there are stories of non-members entering the temple with fake temple recommends.)
3. Thirdly, as we take roll in sunday school class, priesthood or relief society, the bar code is a way to track an individuals activity. I see no problem with this nor do I find it an invasion of privacy. The Temple recommend is a privilege and the Church may track those that enter.
Thanks for your feedback dbackers, I wonder why the Church have taken so long to implement something like this? I mean the Church has all the resources and to me there was a great need for it for a VERY long time. I am speaking specifically in terms of security and antis going to the Temple, filming, etc. Nevertheless, I am glad by the new decision although I am sure there will be issues with it, doesn't people fake credit cards as well? It won't be as easy as the old one though. I wonder if this applies here in the Caribbean as well.
I am sure that it will go church wide, I am just wondering how this will be done. Most stakes and missions will not have the ability to just make a new "bar code like" like temple recommends. I am wondering if they will be sent to church headquarters and then sent in the mail or will stakes be given the ability to create these.
I think that this is cool. Now Anti-Mormons will find it harder to sneak into the temple. I think that this is a more effeciant way of tracking memberships use of the sacred environment of the temple.
I have my new one. As dbackers pointed out already, there are lots of reasons for switching. Personally, I think the main one is security, but the numerous ways the church could use tracking features would certainly benefit the church planning.
It was explained to our local leadership that it is SOLELY for security. We were further informed that it would NOT be used for tracking. So we will not be in a better position than we are in now to know how many of our local members are attending the temple (talking just numbers and not names).
Best part was the interviews were extremely quick, with the stake coming to all our wards to make sure it was done immediately. You can imagine if everything went the traditional route.
The expiration dates also remain the same (so everyone's recommend does not renew at the same time).

Comments: I find it hard to believe that it has not occurred to anyone here that if that if the Spirit was even half of what it is made out to be then there should be no way for someone to get into the temples who shouldn't be there. This is barely going to slow anyone down who really, really wants to get in. Besides one can always join and later lie to get their own recommend anyways.
