Also, I think it is important for everyone to learn at least some basic sewing skills as far as mending, darning, hemming, etc.  Who knows how long our great abundance will be available to have "disposable" shirts?

Will duct tape work here? biggrin.gif Or do I have to use needle and thread??? laugh.gif:-->laugh.gif
I have a sewing machine, and I even know how to use it! I won't mend zippers though. I'll yank them out and sew in velcro instead, or use duct tape. Don't knock the tape, works great for an emergency hem! Better than stapling or using pins.

I agree with FarSeer, everyone should know some basic mending. I wish I had paid attention to Grandma and Dad when they taught me to darn socks. I have about 12 pairs that are only worn on the heel! I refuse to throw them out, but I also don't know how to mend them.

Maybe I should research that on the net ~ mmm think I will.
Offtopic but,
Oh No, JB is irritated again! Maybe Santa will help to improve his mood! xmas.gif

Hey, JB, I first raised this issue that the question

Should every woman know how to do it?

was/is sexist. I didn't mean to offend you. I was asking it in a good natured joking way. What I meant then, I still mean. I think all people male or female shouid know how to sew, so yes all women should learn to sew, but so should all men as well.

I am sorry if it wasn't obvious in my post, that I was attempting humor in my response. cry.gif

Speaking of darning socks... I came across this on an email group I subscribe to. Great basic directions for darning socks -- and anything knitted, actually.

Terrific reference! and there is a page for printing the directions.

Can you sew?

::blushing:::

Thanks smile.gif Just glad to help! I saw the link and remembered our little discussion here. Handy lil nugget, eh? The other pages have great tutorials on spinning & dying yarn, weaving, and knitting as well -- including patterns. This is becoming a lost art. I'll be printing out each one and including in my "re-establishing civilizaiton" binder smile.gif

(Yes, I'm a "doomer")

Can sew - Page 2

My mother did quite a lot of sewing when I was a young girl, so I picked up bits and pieces over the years. She started me on a sewing machine when I was 8. The project was a simple smock type dress. It came out very well.

I don't machine sew much these days except for quick and easy decorating things like curtains and such. I don't do well with patterns, so I do more of a free-form style- but my fabric grain and prints are always nicely matched. biggrin.gif

I prefer to hand sew hems. Doing a little embroidery here and there is nice, too.

I only wish I could sew! Let me just mention that knowing how to sew and knowing how to run material through a machine are two way different things. As much as I cannot sew, I have the title seamstress on my resume. I used to work for Beehive Clothing making garments. the only thing I learned from that place was how to thread a surger. I can't even hem my husband's pants.
