Comments: I think a reason for Indo-Trinidadians of having any thought that 'fairer is better' is because in this island we mostly have East Indians and African descents. It all goes back to the history. Indians came to the islands to get work and to make a living for themselves by working on the sugar plantations. The people they worked for (the overseers/ farmers etc.) were not their same race. Actually most of the times they were fair skinned (most times Whites/British).
Now, before these indians were recruited from India, the farmers in trinidad (also other caribbean islands like Guyana) had other people working on the estates but they were not cut out for the hard work. However when they turned their attention to the Indians, they fit the job well. One of the factors being their skin colour. This was an advantage (as compared to bond-servants/Chinese labourers etc) because the indians could withstand the harsh weather conditions at long working periods.
The Indians would look at these White people and obviously think that they have lots of money and had high social status.
This stigma has always been attached to 'White people'.
Also to this day when you see a white person walking down the street in Trinidad, one would think he is loaded with money. He's either here because he has some business or on vacation.
This mentality starts at the homes with the young ones. Parents if you want to make a change, you have to be that change.

Tobago and Trinidad Colour Skin

Don't dare to say that to a local East Indian 'cause they'll look at you horrified. I made a comment or two in the past and the feedback I got was very negative.
