This is a profession that in the US is becoming flooded. This is due to the ease of enrolling in the Computer Science programs at most universities coupled with the last few years of layoffs of experienced computer programmers. In a good economy, a computer programmer straight out of college could make US $40000 - $50000; an experienced professional (5+ years experience) can make US $80000 -$100000. It also depends on which aspect of programming the individual will become involved in. Java and C++ programmers are usually in high demand, XML, CGI, Perl and other web languages are second, and the Machine languages like Assembly are usually at the bottom in terms of demand. My advice to the individual looking into programming is to get certified as a Windows or some OS language as well; it may help you get in the door, and once you are in, you can specialize in a different language, such as C, Java or RPG.
