Pope Urban II

Do you think Pope Urban II was correct in saying that God would absolve any sin associated with the Crusades?

In response, Pope Urban II called a conference at the city of Clermont, France in 1095, concluding the eight days of deliberation with one of history's most influential speeches. Mounting a lofty scaffold, the Pope exhorted the assembled multitude to wrest the Holy Land from the hands of the Infidel and assured them that God would absolve them from any sin associated with the venture. His words fell on receptive ears as the crowd responded with cries of "It is the will of God!", "It is the will of God!". The Crusades had begun.

II Urban Pope

My abrupt and sincerest apologizes to all Catholics for what I have to say. I will always speak my opinion true to myself, despite who it may offend.

Pope Urban was not only wrong, but was a manipulating liar. He told the soldiers that they could do what ever they wanted in the name of God so that they would be able to set aside their morals and fight as true soldiers against the enemy. He could have no mercy being shown in battle against the vicious Muslim armys of the middle east. By allowing them forgiveness for any bad things done, he paved the way for the rape and pillage of Jerusalem in the name of God. He was a horrible man who was willing to sacrifice the souls of the soldiers for the conquest of the Holy Land.

I have always felt that Catholicism is a religion of convenience. You basically commit any wrong doing, make a confession, a few hail Mary prayers and everything is well with you.
