Why Do Teenagers Want To Be Popular At School? - Page 8

I'm not really popular in my High School In the USA. I don't wear the 140$ paint/ripped pants from A&F or an American Eagle Sweatshirt. I fell that being popular is a waste of effort and time. As long as you have friends or something along that line to back you up in a fight if you get in one. That is all that really matters. I shop at Goodwill, a thrift store with cheap clothing. I do that because i NEED to wear clothing, might as well make it as cheap as possible, I don't wanna spend 200$ on a shirt and pants that were made in a sweat shop in China (no offence intended), and won't last me cause I am still growing. I can get a pant shirt combo for bout 7.50$ and AFFORD to grow out of it. The problem with "popular" people is that they don't live in the real world. Their parents buy them their cars and clothes. I WORK to buy my clothes. The don't seem to realize that one day they won't be living off their parents anymore.

School Popular To Teenagers Why

I feel it has to do with a lack of attention at home or a lack of self-esteem. When they do try to be popular it can go one of two ways: a slap in the face or they really do become popular. A slap in the face is more likely since the popular kids are usually a very small percentage compared with the larger population in a typical high school.

Low self esteem I guess. I've never had a need to be popular at least in a positive way. You can be popular in another way too: the guy or girl that's picked on or some other popular negative title most bullies like to give you.

Who wouldn't want fame, glory and to be looked up to? Seriously though I think its like totally about feeling like your wanted and others want to be like you or even be you.

School Popular To Teenagers Why

I believe they want to have a reason for living. That might sound very extreme but its the reality. Only the best of teens are always highlighted. If you aren't the fastest, strongest, most handsome or pretty then you're just out there with the rest of 'regulars'.

Why Do Teenagers Want To Be Popular At School?

I tend to agree with TechnoGnome, as I was never really popular. I went to a relatively small high school (Only 80 people in Senior Class, maybe 90-100/year in other years), but even so I had at least one person come up to me every year and say "Wait, I thought you left. Have you been attending all this year?" It really makes you feel unimportant and unnoticed, but that wasn't a terrible fate for me. I had 2-3 close friends and was in band/drama, so knew other people. I kept good grades and have now pursued and received my Ph.D. I never cared about popularity. The people who were popular in high school didn't seem to have any personality and purposefully did stupid things to get noticed/in trouble.

But to answer the original question, I think people pursue being popular because they seek validation (No intrinsic self-worth, so seek their worth in others' perceptions), which I think stems from their parents. Most of the popular kids' parents were the same kind of air-headed socialites that wanted to be popular as adults (President of the PTA/leader in this or that/whatever). I got the impression that they thought it was a good thing to be popular because that is the only way their parents got by. Among me and my friends, we never worried about who was liked the most or who was the most handsome, etc. We just were ourselves and enjoyed being young (We still did our fair share of stupid things, but not to get noticed, just because we thought they looked fun).

I don't know that I agree with the self worth as being a reason for popularity. I think it has part in it, maybe the way a "Popular" student handles their self worth. I actually think it has more to do with social status, their parents are in a higher social status / class their for so are they. The thing is, everyone has some sort of self worth issues at some point in their lives. I think teenagers are more susceptible it those self worth issues.

I moved around a lot during my school years, always in a different school every 2 years, mostly in my home state. I was bullied in every school but one. The only school I wasn't bullied in was was when my dad moved us to Idaho, I was in junior high them (Now called middle school). I wasn't popular there but I got along with most everyone. I was only there for one year. Then I moved back to my home state and the bulling started all over. I spent my last two years in one school and by then all I wanted to do was be done so I focused in my studies and did really those last two years. On the last day of 12 grade, when I walked out the school doors, I left all that behind. It was like a snake sheading his skin, I just left those problems right there at those doors. I have never returned to that high school not even for class reunions.

My youngest child graduates High school tomorrow. She is a very independent young woman and the most confident of all my kids. She also has grown up in one town so went to one high school. The thing is that ever since entering elementary school she has stated she never wanted to be popular. I think this is due to seeing how the "Popular" kids treated her siblings. She has had her problems with other kids in school but unlike my other kids she just naturally new how to handle them. Though she was never popular she was very well liked by almost everyone who comes into contact with her.

Congratulations on seeing your child graduate - what a relief right? High school is just another point of life where you learn things to help you with the rest of your life. Most teens see how they are accepted in high school as how they will be for the rest of their lives, they don't see it as a short period where most of it will be forgotten. Truth is sometimes a lot of the jocks and prom queens turn out to be losers and the quite person who no one notices becomes a real success.
