Are Animals Inherently Property?

Are humans superior to animals? Do we have a right over them to decide their fate or should they be allowed to live how they will? Do they do the same for others? What are your thoughts?

I think having ownership over another living thing is completely a human concept. It is not natural I think, to declare ownership over something that has its own entity, spirit, will, or whatever. I suppose one can say that is my dog, or that is my child, but do you really own it?

Then you are against having a pet, for instance no one should have a dog since she will become confined to wishes of her master.

Not exactly, I mean if you have a pet there can be a guardianship over the pet. You assume responsibility over the animal yes, because like you said its being kept in a controlled enviroment.

However I don't think that allows complete ownership, in the sense that it is now yours to do whatever you want with. The pet still has its own inherent rights as a living thing.

Well let's look at it this way by reversing things... If the dog was the head of the home wanted you to stay in it's home and he feeds you what he wants, tells you where to go and what tricks to perform at what times will you be accepting of this controlled environment?

Myself personally, if my master was nice and I was being taken care of. I be ok with the controlled enviroment.

As long as the tricks were not like, every day I had to do like 10 tricks or be beat. As long as I was getting fed regular dog food and had fresh water.

Then again I do have a wild streak in me so as soon as I had the chance I would probably cut and run. Not really against the owner but just for fun, I would come back after I got tired. biggrin.gif

Certain animals make really good pets, where others make horrible pets. Many species of the cat and dog tree still are a bit wild. It is only natural for such an animal to seek freedom from time to time.

I think you are only saying so because you have not experienced confinement in that degree, and may see it only as a moment of time where as for an animal in this situation it is forever until death. However based on your answer it seems that you do lean towards animals being inherently property based on the preposition that you believe some of them want to be your pet.
