Autism Awareness Day Is April 2

Today is Autism Awareness Day. More and more children are diagnosed with autism every year and we still do not know what is the real cause of this condition.

SALT LAKE CITY -- There may come a day soon when everyone will know someone with autism. The numbers are growing, though no one knows why. Today, parents are hoping to make a difference.

Amy Baker has two sons diagnosed with autism.

"[They were diagnosed] when they were pretty young, so we've had a few years at this," she says.

She's not in the minority. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the numbers have increased from one in 150 to one in 110 children with autism. It's one in 70 boys.

"Before you know it, everyone will know someone with autism," says Baker.

April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day. Baker is wearing a blue puzzle piece pin on her shirt. It's the symbol for Autism Speaks, an organization for which she does volunteer work. She says people will be wearing blue or using blue lights to commemorate the day....

This year World Autism Awareness Day will on a Saturday, a perfect day to get families involved in activities with Autistic Children and others so they can learn the challenges and try to give / seek help.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called for increased support for children and adults with autism and their families, saying public awareness about the condition remains low, with those affected suffering discrimination, abuse, isolation and violation of their fundamental rights. Ref. Source 7

April Day Awareness Autism

If someone comes up to you and asks for money for Autism or 'Light it up blue' ask them how does that help a child in a city, town or village where they cannot get access to basic services?
