Comments: Yes 2/3 of the church is inactive and about 1/3 of them the church does not know where they are. Convert baptisms have fallen since 1997, so much of the growth is through births. In fact the church membership is shrinking, according to the new poll on religion in the US where people polled asked what church they affiliate with. This means that many have gone inactive and left the church, but they are still recorded as members.

LDS Church among largest, growing U.S. Churches
With its headquarters in Salt Lake City, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reported 6,058,907 members in the U.S. And Canada, fourth-most in the yearbook's Top 25 listing of the largest national churches but well behind the 68.5 million Catholics accounted for in North America. Religion census reveals substantial LDS growth
The findings, released today in Chicago during the annual meetings of the Associated Church Press, show that while Catholic churches reported a 5 percent decline in membership during the decade that ended in 2010 and mainline Christian denominations reported a 12.8 percent decline during the same time period, the LDS Church reported growth of 45.5 percent. LDS Church membership reaches 15 million
"I am happy to announce that two weeks ago the membership of the church reached 15 million," President Monson said. "The Church continues to grow steadily and to change the lives of more and more people every year. What I don't get is why the emphasis on the number of members when a good chunk of that number really don't even attend church.
