"First, the Passion of the Christ. Now, the torment of the Easter Bunny?
It may not have been as gruesome as Mel Gibson's movie, but many parents and children got upset when a church trying to teach about Jesus" crucifixion performed an Easter show with actors whipping the Easter bunny and breaking eggs."

I encourage you to read the entire article. I can not believe this. What in the world were these people thinking!
You have a right to teach the truth about the Easter Bunny if you feel this is important to your parishoners, but I think some kind of warning is in order first so that parents can make an informed decision about whether or not to bring their children.
Sounds like the "Hell Houses" that many evangelical Christian churches have on Halloween. I don't understand why so many of them feel they have to use horror and disgust to drive people away from cultural traditions.
I may agree that Halloween is not good and that the bunny and eggs take away from the meaning of Easter, but I think that those things can be taught in a much more effective way.

Performers broke eggs meant for an Easter egg hunt and also portrayed a drunken man and a self-mutilating woman, said Jennifer Norelli-Burke, another parent who saw the show in Glassport, a community about 10 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. "It was very disturbing," Norelli-Burke said. "I could not believe what I saw. It wasn't anything I was expecting." |
Whilst I believe that people should have freedom of speech, I also believe that the parents with their children should also have had some sort of warning to what exactly they were being exposed to watching.
At least so that they could have made an informative decision as to whether it was suitable for their children to watch!
I can't understand why people have to be so 'heavy handed' at getting their message across sometimes, surely there are other methods that could have been adopted, without frightening vulnerable children.
Unfortunately, I could not access the link provided but I will go ahead and respond to this post.
It is a sad day for all, when adults resort to violence as a way to explain to children about the pain and suffering Christ endured when he was crucified. Do these adults really believe that the children would achieve a better understanding of what Christ endured? I think the only thing that these children would remember is, how much the poor rabbit suffered. Being subjected to such violence will actually traumatize a child rather than encourage the child to learn. This is the worst possible way to teach a child about Christ. In fact, this violent display may send a negative message to children; that is, it is acceptable to abuse, beat or kill animals while explaining an important lesson. These adults are forgetting that most children love rabbits and even have them as pets because they are so soft, fluffy and cuddly. Children also associate rabbits with the Easter bunny and by beating up the poor animal may actually discourage children from celebrating Easter, since they may think that this is a time for beating up rabbits.
I wonder what PETA had to say about this?
