Autopsy: Boot camp guards killed teen
QUOTE |
A teenager who died at a Florida boot camp was suffocated by guards who were restraining him, a medical examiner has determined. The teen's mother hailed the findings, saying "the truth is out," but a lawyer for one of the guards accused the examiner of giving in to political pressure. |
There is a new case evolving from the Martin Lee Anderson case now. There was a worker at the boot camp who is suing the Department of Juvenile Justice because he claims he was fired after take the role of "whistleblower." Meaning, he had pointed out to the head honchos at the boot camp that there was something wrong with how the officers were treating the kid, and he was fired right after that. There is actually a law that protects whistleblowers.
Also, there was a law established called the Martin Lee Anderson Act that was passed back on June 1, 2006. It shut down all boot camps in the state of Florida, and replaced the program with the STAR program. The STAR program is a residential facility for juveniles, but the rules are stricter. Staff are trained specifically in counseling and dealing with juveniles. It also outlaws the use of mechanical restraints, Taserz, and chemical and aeresol substances being used on the juveniles. Juveniles must also take a physical before they enter the facility. A journal I read said that as of July 1, 2006, only one county had expressed interest in participating.
