The Most Important Subject - Page 2

There seems to be a huge consensus in this room so I must disagree biggrin.gif I think Math is the key to the world around us. It is the universal language and allows people of all races, tongues, cultures, etc to work together and produce some of the world's greatest achievements. Being an engineer myself, I have seen how techincally inclined individuals can communicate without having to know each other's language. Don't get me wrong, I completely agree that learning a language, preferably English, is to everyone's advantage, but I must be the advocate for Math as the most important subject, ever.

Good question. Communicating must be pretty important as you can't learn much else without it! I should like to stand up for religion and politics though - the latter has been called a divine science, and so it seems to me.

I also must disagree. I think that philosophy is the greatest area that should be studied. The ability to reason is a key element for people to truly understand. As a side note religion falls under the philosophy department at my school.

Well, yes, LDS Forever.

You see, to my mind, religion is learning how to exercise our will (or agency) in a manner that helps us grow; politics is concerned with that freedom which enables us to exercise that will in the physical world - all other subjects are thus encompassed by these.

I understand the points about religion and politics, however both require a knowledge of one's native language to comprehend. I have met many people who, because they are so uneducated in even the very basics of their own tongue they cannot for the life of them understand what you are trying to say or express what they have within their minds. Comprehension, which used to be a separate subject in Primary school during my days, was set aside from regular writing and other subjects simply because it is the foundation of all others, if you cannot comprehend, then how can you grow, how can you make the correct choices, etc.

Fundamental basics of a language are easily learned. These fundamentals stay with you, and continue to grow as you use them. For exaple years ago I took three years of spanish and one year of advanced french. I now have a relatively decent vocabulary in both languages as well as in my primary english. Unlike the languages, I don't think the benifits of philosophy can be achieved through a class or two in high-school.

That is just it, the thread is not about the speed at which something can be learned or when it is learned, but which is the most important subject. Second, consider that we are on the education board, religion and politics are not the first subjects one learns in life, indeed they are not considered 'subjects' for formal education in most places, but just 'common knowledge' or 'optional knowledge'. The first things we teach a newborn is recognition of sounds with the idea to comprehend the language and make associations with things, people and places. Thus my argument remains the same... one's native language is by far the most important subject that one must master first. Notice, I am not saying one must be perfect in it, but they should know the fundamentals so that they can comprehend anything else. Another simple way to look at this is speaking English to a person who knows only Chinese or even simply joining this forum. There might be someone who sees a topic about nuclear science within this forum and they want to give their input about it, so they decide to register, but because they cannot even read simple directions on the registration form they cannot enter the community or read the thread.
Offtopic but,
I usually do not follow up threads much except for the LDS board, but this one is close to me, because I have to deal with people on a daily basis who claim to know religion, or politics, or business, but because they do not understand their own language they misinterpret and misunderstand the most basic of writings and are thus led astray in all their supposed 'brilliance'.
