This is an epidemic, but is the world treating it as such?

Aids And Hiv Activism

AIDS can affect everyone, even if you are not an HIV carrier or showing signs as in AIDS, you may know some that has died or suffering with the anguish of it. Recently it has been shown that it is being carried from truck drivers in Asia via prostitutes they sleep with while on the road. Soon, according to one report it will cover most of Asia and then Asia will have more cases than Africa! This thread is not about the medical effects of the disease, but what is being done about its spread and the availability of non-expensive drugs to combat it.

I think part of the problem is that abstinence is no longer valued in our society. You see topics all the time about "safe sex," but in reality, what is safe sex? Using a condom that has the potential of breaking? Taking a pill that may prevent a girl from getting pregnant, but there certainly isn't anything in that pill that prevents a person from getting HIV and AIDS.

I think we've become to lax on speaking out against having sex until a man and woman have been married. Our society focuses more on having "safe sex" rather than not having sex at all until you're legally married. Activists aren't teaching the optimistic view points of saving yourself.

Some people go get tested before they have sex with one another, but in all seriousness, how many teenagers get tested before going to a party where everybody is getting drunk?

A lot of it starts in the home. I can remember the first time anything about having sex was brought to me by my mother. She didn't say "Don't have sex until you're married." She approache me with "IF you get pregnant, you can always come to me." Had I not had that innate reasoning in my mind that having sex before I was married was wrong, and merely lived off the principal she had instilled in me, I would have been having sex. Parents aren't taking the initiative of teaching their children about abstinence. Of course there are always exceptions, but I'm just making a generalization.

If we want the spread of AIDS and HIV, and other STD's for that matter, we need to focus on bringing the acceptance of pre-marital sex down. By using the excuse of "It's just in society's nature to have sex all over the place" and using that to sugar coat what is happening in our world, we're saying it's okay. "It's okay Suzy, go have fun and have sex. It's just what society has brought you up in." Children need to be taught and have it continually emphasized that it is not okay to give away one of the few things in life you can never get back before you are with the person you are going to spend the rest of your life with.

There is no doubt that the HIV virus has reached epidemic proportions, that is not debatable, it is fact.

I fail to see how abstinence is the cure. That is unrealistic to the extreme level. Most young people I know regularly practice sex before marriage and there is nothing wrong with that.

I think education is the most important tool to curb the spread of this virus. But unfortunately when organisations such as the Catholic Church are telling their followers that it is a sin to use condoms the odds are stacked up against people.

We need a collaborative approach to educate people to practice safe sex methods like using condoms. Also to be careful when taking part in activities that possess a risk of transmission. I really can't see any other way to prevent the spread. What do others think?
