9/11 Mosque - Page 3

I still think that this Mosque is not that big of a deal. You have to walk half way down a street and look around a corner to just ground zero and it is still a few blocks away. Soon no matter where you build a mosque in New York your going to be able to walk down a street look in the direction of ground zero and be able to see it. Is this being fair to Muslims?

I just mentioned on this Thread: International Burn A Koran Day that Donald Trump offered to buy the proposed spot for the Islamic center with the agreement that they move at least five blocks more away from the current spot they want to build.

I do believe that they have the right to build there as US citizens. However, I do see it in being very bad taste. You would never catch the US buying land underneath the ground zero dome in Hiroshima and turning it into a McDonalds or a amusement center. Why...because it is just bad taste.

international QUOTE
The number of mosques in New York City has increased dramatically in a generation, going from under 10 in 1970 to over a 100 in 2001, including 17 in Manhattan. That number is much higher today and many of the mosques have gone from storefront operations to occupying large buildings and using outreach programs to find converts. Those mosques have also begun to muscle in on local businesses, trying to shut down nearby bars. This establishes the mosque as not just a building where Muslims enter and do what they do, but as a foothold for controlling and remaking entire neighborhoods on a street-by-street basis.

There aren't even enough practicing muslims in Manhattan to necessitate such a building, but they do have the right to build on the land. Conversely, the building, I believe, would have to be built using union workers and the workers are free to elect not to work on the project...thus stopping it. That is a right just as equal to the right to build.

The timing of this argument along with that preacher in Florida that wants to burn the Koran is very appropriate. We are bending over backwards to ensure that the rights of these people who want to build a mosque are highly prized. We are reminded that these are rights that any US group would have after buying property and we shouldn't let a little thing like running planes filled with people into skyscrapers that used to stand near that location taint our judgment. However, it is nearly blasphemy for a preacher to talk about burning a few books down in Florida because they just happen to be the Koran. There is no law against that, but we make this guy out to be a buffoon because of him wanting to exercise his rights to burn a few books. There is even discussion of the government (local/state) stepping in to make sure he isn't allowed to carry out what is his right. Honestly, the preacher is only guilty of the same thing...BAD TASTE, but no one seems to be that interested in protecting his rights.

So yes, these guys do have a right to build on the land that they purchased. If they want to build a mosque, then they really should be allowed to...but honestly...they really shouldn't ask. That wound is too deep in the american psyche.

Just imagine the screaming you would hear from this community if we flanked every mosque in NY with a Pork BBQ place on each side...

Trump offers to buy site of proposed GZ mosque

Donald Trump has stepped to the plate and made a cash offer with an 'immediate closing' date to buy the site of the proposed Ground Zero mosque. The Donald says he's making the offer not because he loves the property site, but for patriotism. He claims he wants to put an end to the controversy and avoid the inevitable endless bickering if the mosque is built. Ref. Source 1

I think having Trump step in and buying the building will put a end to this controversy. My only thought on this now is both sides going to agree to this to allow it to happen or are we still going to see angry words shouted at each other over this?

Tariq Ramadan Debates Moustafa Bayoumi on Proposed Islamic Center Near Ground Zero

On the ninth anniversary of 9/11, thousands take to the streets of Lower Manhattan for and against the plans to build an Islamic community center near Ground Zero. We host a different kind of debate. Tariq Ramadan, one the world's most renowned Muslim scholars who was barred from entering the United States for six years under the Bush administration, says it should be built elsewhere. He debates Mustafa Bayoumi, an associate professor at Brooklyn College and author of How Does It Feel to Be a Problem? Being Young and Arab in America. Ref. Source 7

If That 'Mosque' ISN'T Built, This Is No Longer America

I am opposed to the building of the "mosque" two blocks from Ground Zero. I want it built on Ground Zero. Ref. Source 1

Comments: Let's make sure we have this straight. The mosque construction site is 2 blocks away from Ground Zero.
Is there a designated distance that a mosque, synagogue or church have to be from Ground Zero? Is it 3 blocks?
I don't see what the fuss is about. Ground Zero already has it's re-building plans finalized.
What I would like to know is if all the businesses in the buildings will be run by Christians or will this become a big issue as well.
Let's face it folks, the mosque building is a non-issue. Let's get on with more important things in our lives.
