The difference between what works and what does not, and we are not just talking in the eyes of the beholder ;)

>:( Years ago the title of web designer was a profession that everyone wanted to get into (it is still that way, but that is not my point) and it has resulted in a lot of wannabes coming online with sub rate web pages and charging loads of money!

This gets me angry because we study, research, become certified and then you have this wannabe who has a pirated copy of an HTML editor and free clipart going to sell unsuspecting customers 'web design'. Unfortunately they get business because a lot of people just do not know the difference between professional web design and 'crap' for want of a better word.

With the advent of better programming and faster computers the 'regular' user can now build web pages too, although by no means the same as a professional, yet they feel comfortable in the fact that they did it on their own.

So web design by itself is infact a dying profession. We used to make good amounts of money from designing, but it has slowed down a lot now, almost to a crawl. New titles of web developer and online programmer are gaining ground as more and more users are mostly interested in the behind the scenes codes that make things work rather that what you see in your browser.

Most of our clients come in from simply seeing our online portfolio and contacting us, of course there is also our referrals from great people like you.

What are your thoughts?

i think that you can see a lot of difference between a website made by a pro or a website made by someone who isn't a pro. websites with a lot of codes are very difficult to make even for pro's. and sites wich are made with webpage wizard or pagebuilder mostly don'y look very unique.

Yes that is true. Also, you can see the difference in graphic and color content. Sometimes the wannabe will use all kinds of freeware graphics and clipart with what I call 'box art' (straight lines and straight to the point look) rather than have a level of finess that should represent them.

Yes, all those things are true but I notice that some people just do not care how the page look as long as it is cheap smile.gif-->rolleyes.gif. Most people I come across with have no idea about the power of the Internet and the business they could possible do through it, therefore, when you try to explain them something they think you're just trying to get their monies rather than explain the difference between a pro-site and one that is not.

With the availability now of ready made templates, it's easier for people to publish their own webpages. For around $60 you can buy a cool site with flash intro and simply put in your content with frontpage. I know that by doing it this way you don't get an original and exclusive design, but for the little bloke it's a cheap alternative.

Although templates are nice - the problem you have is that 1000 others have your site on the net. For the non-tech viewer they may think you have an affiliation with another web site with the exact same template.

I agree that if you are serious about setting up a business on the net, a specifically tailored site is a must. But for people who only want a hobby site templates are the go.

Offtopic but,
After looking at your products and pricing, I have to say that they represent good value and I will be quite happy to refer people to you, should they ask.Maybe you could generate a specific link for me so I could donate my 10% commision to this forum?

One important thing to weigh is the cost of buying a template and hiring a web designer. Templates can be good if you know how to work them as they still require editing which means time, and time is money. If you have the time then I guess you can save money that way, if you don't then you may find you lose business spending time configuring it.

Offtopic but,
I am not sure what you mean by specific link? Do you mean that when the customer contacts me they say that you referred them so you get the 10% commission we have advertised on our site? If so then there is not a specific link for that... just contact me directly via the contact page letting me know that client 'x' was referred by you and will be contacting me shortly. If you meant something else then send me an Email with you IM account and I will contact you for a quick chat. Thanks for refereing.
