Another Microsoft Bug!
QUOTE |
SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) on Friday issued a widely expected patch for its Internet Explorer browser, which was known to have a flaw that would let hackers take control of computers and distribute malicious software code |
It probably will never end, and it really ticks me off. Micorosoft put out a "complete" version of Windows Me in August 2000, and yet now FOUR YEARS later there are still "critical updates" to be downloaded from their website. Now I realise that things like the Internet have changed computing dramatically over the last four years, and for that reason some updates might be necessary, but really, as many as there are?
My thought is that Microsoft should work on R&D a little more when creating software, ESPECIALLY when creating an operating system. It's frightening when you think that essentually they're releasing an incomplete, potentially dangerous product that we're happy to spend hundreds of dollars on.
I read somewhere that if your shoelaces exploded every Thursday morning you wouldn't accept it. Yet the same thing happens with computers and we do just accept it. We don't like it, but it's a fact of life. Imagine if your car just stalled out whenever it felt like it. Would you buy a new model knowing that was likely? Of course not, yet you buy buy Windows knowing it's likely.
It's time Bill made a SAFE and STABLE system.
Very good points, Paul, all of which I agree with. The R&D statement you made just isnt frugal for Microsoft because it would mean too much invested time and money; time that they could be making money off buggy products. Like you mentioned, we are slaves to their products and are forced to buy them, even though we know they are incomplete and will require major upgrades for the duration of their existence. Here is an interesting article from informationweek.com, talking about the recent huge SP2 that was released for XP which now has been identified as exposing an IE flaw, only a week after it was released. Same story, different day:

Proof that Windows gives even Bill Gates problems!

I am sure he felt like a loser there...
I remembered hearing about this but hadn't seen the video before. I wonder if the guy who was doing the demonstration still has his job after that?
That video was pretty funny.
Personally, I don't have a problem with windows. I run XP Home and never had a problem. My system has been running for 2 years(I never switch my machine off) and I have never downloaded a single patch.
On the other hand, my girlfriend downloads all the latest patches and her system is always crashing and gives her all sorts of problems.
Maybe Microsoft is evil and the patches are actually designed to give you problems. Who knows?
For anyone using Win2000 and RAS, DO NOT install Service Pack 4! This service pack will break RAS in Windows 2000. Microsoft has even admitted to it. See their Knowledge Base article below for more info. The kicker is most folks cannot remove the SP because they did not choose the option to do so when they installed it, and the hotfix for this issue can only be obtained by contacting Microsoft directly. Good luck with that!
