Ever heard of Kazaa? - Page 4

I don't download anything unless it is offered by the copyright owners. For example, there have been quite a few artists who have offered some of their music for free download, and some of them have been very good.

Baen Books has over 40 titles available on their free library for download.

So, what does downloading files, whether legal or illegal, do to an industry? The exact same thing that one person lending their book or CD to another does. It stirs interest, acts as word-of-mouth advertising, and creates sales.

I have borrowed several CDs from libraries, and have learned of many Led Zeppelin songs that I didn't previously know. So, when How the West Was Won, a compilation of live Zeppelin performances in the early '70s, came out, I purchased a copy of it. I wasn't a huge Zeppelin fan before borrowing that CD from the library. Now, I look forward to the time when I can purchase a complete box set of their music.

I heard Loreena McKennit on the radio. A friend let me borrow his copy of Book of Secrets. I listend to all of it, and fell in love with it. Now I own a copy of it, and have it ripped so that I can listen to The Mummer's Dance at any time on my Tungsten E.

As I said, I don't download music, and definitely don't use Kazaa. But using the same logic (borrowing CDs) has resulted in sales for the music industry.

I think I am almost the opposite of you when it comes to music. I will hear a song that I like, and then I find out that that is the only song from the particular artist that sounds like that, and I don't care for the rest of the CD. I would rather download one song for free than pay $15 to buy a CD for just that one song.
On the other hand, there are several sites that let you pay a small fee (usually <$1) to download (legally) just one song.

Many of my friends have Kazaa, and use it to download games, music, etc. But I am afraid to use it. With Kazaa, you never know what else you download with music or games. It could be viruses which I prefer to not have on my computer.

I usually play games either online, or games that I buy. And we also like to use the sites Melodray has mentioned to purchase single songs.

Court: File-Sharing Services May Be Sued

Internet file-sharing services will be held responsible if they intend for their customers to use software primarily to swap songs and movies illegally, the Supreme Court ruled Monday, rejecting warnings that the lawsuits will stunt growth of cool tech gadgets such as the next iPod.

The unanimous decision sends the case back to lower court, which had ruled in favor of file-sharing services Grokster Ltd. and StreamCast Networks Inc. on the grounds that the companies couldn't be sued. The justices said there was enough evidence of unlawful intent for the case to go to trial. File-sharing services shouldn't get a free pass on bad behavior, justices said.

Ever heard Kazaa - Page 4

I used to use Kazaa like it was going out of style (years ago when it came out), but I quit after realizing how unfair it was to people in the music industry. Yes... I do think they make WAY too much money anyway, but still.. I would rather get good quality music from the horse's mouth and pay for it, than download someone's uploaded crappy version for free with all sorts of computer sounds and cuts through it. Some people do not know how to cut music and nothing made me more upset than waiting to download a song on dial up for over an hour and have it turn out to be a cut up mess. Thank goodness I never got any viruses or worms while I used it.
