When you see an extension on a domain do you know what it means?

What is an 'extension' on a domain?

Something like this:

tg = Togo
tk = Tokelau
to = Tonga
tt = Trinidad, Tobago
tn = Tunisia
tr = Turkey
tm = Turkmenistan
tc = Turks and Caicos Islands
tv = Tuvalu

Example: www.any-old-domain.com.tt

Here is a good site to go to:

Now, why does a domain end up with .tt, instead of .com or .org or .net. I understand that these are country designations, but what determines if you use the country designation instead of one of the generic. I not that .gov is for us government and .mil is us military, is .tt only for the Trindad or Tobago government's use?

Special extensions are available to people within that country only. For instance you cannot own a .us domain and be setup to do business with it in India.
