Move afoot to station women on submarines

The military's senior leaders are preparing to integrate women into the last area of the Navy still off-limits to them: submarines. In the past two days, the Navy secretary, the chief of naval operations and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff have all said they are committed to the change, though none would specify a time frame. I didn't know women weren't allowed on submarines. I wonder what's the reason for that? Maybe they didn't want women in such close quarters with men?
