Trinidad & Tobago Marriage Act

What are your thoughts about the Trinidad & Tobago Marriage Act which allows for children as young as 12 years old to be married with an adult? Some religious leaders want it protected while many in the country want it changed to 18. This comes on the heels of a lot of sexual child abuse reports in the country.

This is not new. It has been law for a long time and if this is shocking enough, what about the IRO openly supporting this law and refusing the idea of abolishing it?

Actually, the Catholic Archbishop has gone on the record as saying that having sexual relations with children is statutory rape and feels the law must change as a child cannot know what is involved in marriage.

That's the Archbishop's point of view, however the IRO as an organization supports that law.

Name: George

Title: Marriage act

Comments: We have a big group of citizens here who are lacking in morals and ethic. They are hell bent on applying the rules and regulations on this island that leads to controversy. They are not satisfied with the amount of lawlessness we have here, and are quite contented to bend the laws or change it thus creating more lawlessness to suit their personal lust or ambitions. This is just another attempt to return to another tribal rule still employed in many backward and semi civilised nations.

I just can't see Trinis adjusting to this to be honest. Even if they made it law there would be be a lot of persecution.
