The Haunted Abbey - D&D 3.5 Game Thread

This is a DnD 3.5 single adventure, it is not a campaign. Anyone is welcome to join but if you are from my Dark Calling campaign you can use your current character here too. Any experience or gold earned here by Dark Calling characters transfers over to Dark Calling, if you survive. The rules here are the same as Dark Calling.

This will be the thread that the party leader posts in, as well as the GM. The haunted abbey plays off of the haunted house theme. There will be a lot of undead. The main goal is to find out what has cursed the abbey and destroy it.

Your party was sent by the nearby town to investigate reports of undead activity near a holy abbey. The abbey is surrounded by swamp and the only way in is by boat.

Your party docks with the island the abbey resides on. You pull your boat up onto land as best you can and survey the immediate area.

It is a foggy, damp, disheartening landfall. In the barren skeleton like trees before you several bodies sway. (60 feet inland) The creaking branches are the only sound. Not a single frog can be heard, which you find strange because during the boat ride threw the swamp their croaks were almost deafening.

The sun is just setting. To the east lies the swamp from which you came. To the north and south the muddy shore mingles with the black waters of the swamp. To the west lies a forest of bone white trees devoid of foliage. Beyond that rests the haunted abbey.

With a disheartened look mixed with disgust Aive surveys the gloomy landscape before lifting his foot and scrapping some unknown filth off his boots only to find nowhere clean to put his foot back down.
He begins to wonder if coming here was a great idea after all.
"I don't like the idea of moving on in the dark, lets wait for sunrise"
he speaks aloud then looks amongst the rest of the party and waits for a response
He then laughs to himself realizing he is own his own once again, just as he is about to set up camp in the empty cannoe a figure hanging amoungst the barren trees catches his eyes and he makes his way pacefully as silently as he can to investigate.

26 move silently to where I guess Servax is hanging

Once investigating the body he will cut it down and question him on what the hell is going on!?! then further into his name and if he will join him.

Back on solid ground, Servax rubs his neck, sorely. "Turn back if you value your life, friend." He suggests sturnly, whilst gesturing back towards the surrounding swamp. "This place is cursed. The dead have taken it. The living souls of so many, corrupted ......."

Servax allows that sentance to fade, losing himself in thought a moment. He suddenly snaps back, pulling his robe down further over his face in a belated attempt to conceal his hideous scars. "I've to return to the abbey. Whatever dark force is here, it has taken from me. I need to end this."

"Coming?" He calls, as he begins to quietly move towads the cursed building.

OOC: Just some precautionary rolls, to make sure we are not ambushed.

Servax has a flash back remembering that he was part of a group of monks who tried to hang themselves. He wonders where the others are and if they succeeded in the act.

Servax looks around, in the trees nearby hang 2 other bodies.

The party also spots a figure "walking" threw the woods in your direction (40 feet away). It is moaning softly to itself. You see it is dragging something behind it and recognize it as a branch.
The branch this person was hanging on must have broke, though its still attached to his neck, he seems unaware.

Aive stands still and silent, a bit shocked and confused, trying to make sense of this all and not stare at the hideous scars upon this strangers face. Avoiding any awkward conversation yet Aive foolishly calls out to the man ahead walking around as he begins to move forward to see if he is ok. He will quickly examine the other hanging monks if he passes them.

Servax cringes as Aive calls out to the undead. "Mind your tongue, human!" he almost spits. Shaking his head he quietly begins moving around to the rear of the creature, using whatever cover is available. He notes Aive's survey of the remaining corpses as he moves.

Aive calls out and has gotten the zombies attention. The zombie dragging his branch, makes a direct line to Aive (stops 10 feet away). All of the zombies (the 2 in the trees) moan loudly. A few other like moans are heard in the distance.

Thus begins the first round of combat.

Aive fires off a well aimed shot as the beast approaches, preparing his rapier as it nears to 10ft. Meanwhile Servax has maneuvered to the rear flank of the creature, quietly preparing to charge once Aive engages into melee.

OOC: Not sure how far around the zombie you'll let me have moved in the time since Aive shouted. I'm just looking not to be charging it at it's immediate front. A side will do. Obviously if Servax has a turn before the two have started melee combat, he will delay.

Relevant rolls:

Initiative - Aive 14, Servax 13

Aive - Initial ranged attack 23, 5 damage.
Aive - First melee attack 7, 2 damage.

Servax - Charge attack 19, 8 damage.

Now that the man is closer Aive see's the monster for what it is. He takes aim as the man hobbles over a dead tree limb. The bolt hits the monk in his heart, he stands up straight and moans.

The corpse looking monk in tattered cloak stares hungrily as it draws near.

Lunging at Aive as if to grab him, it is held short momentarily. The branch it's dragging snags on the dead branch it just overcame.

Servax meanwhile has flanked the zombie and attacks. His round house hits the back of the target squarely. A snap of bone is heard from within the zombie. It falls to the ground, stiff, motionless.

Then a loud (crack / breaking) sound comes from the tree branches, one of the hanging monks breaks himself free landing 20 feet east of Aive. You think he has also broken a leg. You hear a thud, snap, and a moan.

You can hear two more moans coming threw the distant woods towards your party. One from the north and one from the south.

The last hanging monk swings (30 feet west) feverishly at the air, kicking its legs angrily.
