A 29-year-old man who styles the traditional topknots sported by sumo wrestlers has admitted to participating in illegal gambling on baseball in a statement to the Japan Sumo Association, it was learned Saturday.
Tokoike, a hairdresser at the Onomatsu stable, is the first JSA member other than a wrestler or stablemaster to admit being linked to betting on baseball, which is a suspected source of funding for the yakuza. The Metropolitan Police Department has already questioned Tokoike, who is suspected of acting as a go-between for wrestlers and bookmakers. (Japan Times)

Sumo stablemaster Otake tenders resignation over gambling scandal Local Japanese News In English
Sumo stablemaster Otake, who was facing a possible expulsion from the Japan Sumo Association over an illegal gambling scandal rocking the Japanese ancient sport, had tendered his resignation, the stablemaster said Monday.
The JSA said it did not accept the resignation and will decide on his punishment in its emergency board meeting Monday afternoon.
Otake, or former sekiwake Takatoriki, 42, had borrowed 20 to 30 million yen from ozeki Kotomitsuki as the stablemaster was hobbled with debts he accumulated in illegal gambling, sources close to the matter said Monday. (AP)
