It is definatley the parents responsibility to monitor the games their children play, but the ESRB rating system needs an overhaul, because games rated mature (grand theft auto) have pornography suitable only for X rated games, or AO (adult only)

Guys, I have read through all the posts so far and its all 6 of one Half a dozen of the other. The GTA series has been sold on the basis that it is a violent interpretation of the underworld activities in Fake US citys.

Now it has been given a Mature rating (18+) as does playboy magazine, its unacceptable in this day and age for a minor to be in possesion of these.

But it is not unacceptable for me, at 29, so why are we getting on the back of the developers and talking about banning the games, where is the responsibility of the disributers in this?

If we take cigarettes as an example, in the Uk you can be prosecuted for buying a packet for anyone under the age of 16, the same goes for acohol.

Yes a child should be brought up with the understanding value of right and wrong, but curiosity overcame me in my youth more than once.

We should be putting this at the feet of the distributers and for them to take a responsibility and they should say 'No' if they have a suspision that the game is being bought for a minor.

It has nothing to do with distribution. No matter how many laws are in place kids who are under 18 will still play this - why - because they are the ones that pirate, copy, steal and so on from the net. Believe you me, these games are calculated at targeting young minds and getting them hooked.

Offtopic but,
I believe my morale standard is influencing my view points here since I am also against the proliferation of drugs, porn, x-movies, etc.

Why should the content of a game offend you if you don't like it don't play it and don't have an influence on someone else playing the game (over 18 that is). No matter what you say or even do you will not stop children from playing this game.

As long as you keep yourself and your underage children from playing the game you have nothing to worry about.

I personally love GBA, I always have an always will. So when I hear about other people wanting it banned it annoys me because all they have to do is make them and their family don't play the game then the problem is solved.

Its been said before but I'll say it again if your so worried about a game what about violent films. Some people would say that due to watching a film they were able to overcome a disaster or problem in their life. Others would say their children have tryed to copy some of the dangerous fighting moves.

The argument is clear, the answer simple, don't play or watch violent or sexually intensive games or videos if your don't like them of render them unsuitable for your younger members of your family.

So how is that the Developers problem then? Do we ban any games from the net?

To be fair these Kids under 18 that download, steal etc etc that you mention, are in the minority of game players of that age.

Offtopic but,
As another example I live in an area that is rife with minors who steal a car and joyride, only to burn it out at the end of the night.

Now do we ban Cars? Jump on the back of manufacturers? even though these stolen cars can in turn lead to.....hit and run accidents?

No we hit the crime prevention, we try and make cars more secure, etc etc

This argument that violence in Games, Movies or what every Causes Kids to have a different outlook on life and commit crimes, in my mind, is absolute rubbish (not the technical term I know) In my view if they can get their hands on this material, and then use it to fuel a phycotic mind, then it would happen if games were here or not, they would find another avenue to fuel this.

It is down to home life, and their own morale values, which is the responsibility of parents.

Offtopic but,
Now I'm pretty sure that my morales are somewhere in the same average bracket as yours are, yet I'm not against most Porn, Violence in Games, X-Movies etc.

Drugs are another subject, as I have tried most in my youth.

And no I would not be happy if I found out my daughters were heavily into drugs. But I think that the life I have given them, the morales I have brought them up with will get them through the impresionable times of their life. As my parents did with me, that allowed me to try yet have the strength to say 'thats my curiosity happy' and stop.

Although both of you are putting up good arguments, you must realize I am not in minority as you will see based on the news bursts within this thread. Now to stay on topic let us not keep referencing movies (this can be discussed in the Movies Board), it is a weak crutch, games are different. Unlike movies, games allows you to become the star, not just watch the star. Therefore you react differently, because in this case you are the one killing, stealing or whatever the game is telling you to do.

Yes but its the same principal in many cases movies lead to games being made which is where I base my similarity. How many times have you dreamt you were the star of a movie. I agree with what your saying though to play a game you become the star. Mabe these violent computer games are a way for people to release their anger theres nothing better than killing a few zombies when your angry.
