I read the article about this item on Wikipedia. It does not sound particularly useful as any speaker of the same size has the same characteristics. The concept seems somewhat promising. I would like to see some information about how effective it is in practice.

I saw this used by Japanese Whalers against Activists shown on Whale Wars. Against humans it caused their head to hurt and they drop to the ground. Aimed at a helicopter in flight it caused the whole helicopter to vibrate and instruments to malfunction. Pilot had to get away as he could not concentrate and was losing control of his helicopter. This is a great device to keep pirates away from ships and I bet it will be standard soon, especially those passing near Somalia.

That was included in the Wikipedia article, that it had been used against Somali pirates. One time the pirates gave up. Another time they came right through it. It may be a useful tool, but the jury is still out on how effective it really is in a tactical situation.

I think it is just a good non-lethal deterrent but not for someone expecting it and insistent on boarding your vessel. They will just wear ear phones and try to shield the sound by maneuvering around the ship.
