Are there new signs of the last days? I think so. The tsunami in Indonesia earlier this year is likely the beginning of a large series of related events. Here are a couple of specific ones to consider.

This is a story of more strange things going on in Indonesia, possibly predicting another huge earthquake and tsunami.

How about this. A cruise ship in the Atlantic was hit by a seven story wave! That is about 70 feet high! The article talks about this being a "freak wave", but that just means that the reporter can't explain it. Something created a wave that high, and I haven't heard of any hurricanes in the Atlantic. Something is happening out there.
I may be an alarmist. But these are just two simple examples of a whole lot of things that I know of happening around the world.
Nah! This old Earth is going to keep on trucking along. It just seems to me that every year there is somebody saying it will be the last. Remember Y2K? Doomsday predictions ran rampant, but the day came and went just like any other. Lets take the Black Death for example, people back then thought that they were living in the "Last days" as well and I admit I can't blame them for thinking it, but none-the-less generations have come and gone since then and conditions have improved. Men have always been barbaric to each other and nature has always been both our best friend and our worst enemy. When bad things happen it isn't a sign of the end, but in my opinion, simply a continuation of the same.
-Unferth
I agree with Unferth, to a point. It is true, all generations have felt they were near the end of days. I do believe that time will come. I also believe we are closer this generation than previous ones have been . However, I wonder if the problem isn't that we have such a different concept of time than God, that we all think we are so close. Even the original Apostles believed they were living in the last days.
Now, having said that, I think many of these events are, in fact, signs of the coming of the last days. I think these same signs in previous generations were also signs of the last days. I just think we don't understand or have the correct sense of time.
With Hurricane Katrina, and the aftermath, heavily in the news, I know that there is a lot of discussion about whether or not this is a sign of the last days before Jesus' return in glory.
I have read some discussion on some mailing lists, as well as listened to some VERY interesting Christian radio discussion on this subject.
In the mailing lists, the general idea is that New Orleans and Biloxi/Gulfport are so wicked that they "deserved what they got". There is something to this, but I don't really buy this line of reasoning.
On the Christian radio station, the discussion was more along the lines of answering the question from nonbelievers about how a "loving God can do such a thing as this." In this case, most people were just claiming that this is a result of living in a "fallen world."
Personally, I do think it is symptom of the end times. I believe that we will see more and more destruction, culminating in huge earthquakes in heavily populated areas.
For example, Revelation says that there will be a star fall out of heaven. Probably an asteroid or comet, similar to the movies Deep Impact and Armageddon. Deep impact, in particular did a great job of showing what would happen if a huge chunk of rock, travelling at incredible speeds (15 to 35 miles per second), would do to the ocean. In fact, it doesn't point out that such a rock would actually go through the entire depth of the ocean and crack the mantle of the earth, causing a horrendous volcano to form. Most likely such a wound to the earth would create a new, large island, or possibly even a new subcontinent to form. It would also likely cause the "ring of fire" to all break loose around the Pacific Rim.
So, while I think that Katrina is symptomatic of the End Times, I don't think it can be chosen as a specific sign that the Last Days are upon us.
QUOTE |
19 For in those days shall be affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be. 20 And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect's sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days.
