Mikko Paatero, Finland's national police commissioner, does not think there will be an opportunity to increase the country's police force over the next few years, provincial dailies belonging to Sanoma Lehtimedia reported Tuesday.
According to Paatero, plans for increasing the police force would probably be scuttled by a shortage of funds caused by the recession.
A working group for the Ministry of the Interior proposed in the spring that the number of police officers in Finland should be increased by one thousand from the 2007 level. The increased cost for the larger police force was calculated as 42 million euros. Source: Helsinki Times
