Supreme Court will hear religious liberty challenge to gay weddings. The Supreme Court agreed today to reopen the national debate over same-sex marriage. The court will hear a challenge from a Colorado baker who had lost lower-court battles over his refusal to create a wedding cake for a gay couple. Like a New Mexico photographer three years ago, the baker cited his religious beliefs. Ref. USAToday.
I'm torn by this. There are degrees of right and wrong on both sides of this. So, the baker should be able to not serve who he wants if he has real religious beliefs that he can prove. By the same token, this doesn't sound very Christian to me. The two men in question should be able to go where they want to buy a cake. By the same token, do they really want this guy making their cake? There are other bakeries, why didn't they just walk out and leave this guy to his beliefs?
I'm not a religious person but I was raised that way. It is unreasonable to expect a person of faith to believe that it is biology and not choice. The scriptures for the main religions forbid homosexuality. How could they be made that way if it is wrong to act in that manner? For a person of faith to believe that it isn't choice Is to make them question God himself.
Well lets see here. We do not make Islamic women remover their head scarves for religious reason. We do not make Catholics eat meat on Friday's during lent so why should we force people to take photographs of an event or bake a cake for an event due to religious reasons. I am sure there are plenty of other wedding cake bakers or Wedding photographers to choose from. IF you are wanting a specific person then you need to respect his freedoms of choice just as he respects your freedoms of choice. Just because he or she does not agree with you does not make them wrong. Forcing someone to do something against their religion or other freedoms goes against the very fabric that has shaped this country. People need to learn to get along and not make such a mountain of a small issue.
Your religious freedom is in the Supreme Court’s hands. We are anxiously awaiting the outcome in Jack Phillips’ case. Jack is the cake artist from Colorado who declined to create artistic expression that conflicted with his faith.
Last December, the United States Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Jack’s case. The outcome of his case could decide whether the government may force you to violate your faith in order to earn your living. It may sound crazy, but that is what’s at stake. Ref. Dennis Prager Show.
The justices ruled 7-2 that "Cake artist" Jack Phillips' religious rights under the Constitution were violated by the state's civil rights commission. As a result, the decision did not resolve whether other opponents of same-sex marriage, such as florists and photographers, can refuse commercial wedding services to gay couples. Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote the court's decision against the same-sex couple, departing from his long history of opinions in favor of gay rights dating back a generation. Ref. USAToday.
