Christmas, or Xmas? - Page 4

JB, I never had children so I didn't have to make the decision about Santa;  but I don't really care for the Santa aspect of Christmas.  Personally I don't buy decorations that have Santa but I defer to the parents of the children I know regarding what I say about Santa.

But I do love to watch children open presents, and I realize that people give gifts because they love their children and that seems to fit into the general idea of Christmas - as long as it isn't overdone.  Last year my four year old niece enjoyed "shopping" for presents for her family - there's nothing more precious than getting a present a four year old picked out herself.

However, I hate obligation gifts, drawing names and buying office gifts etc.  It's like a useless trinket exchange.  (what I mean is you get the name of someone you don't know and someone that doesn't know you gets your name - you get something you don't need and I would prefer that money go to charity than be spent like that)  I make some really good homemade jam (or so I've been told) or I get oranges from my sister's  grove for gifts other than for the children.

Xmas Christmas

When I was old enough to know, I think of Jesus being born to save the world, when I think of Christmas.  Of course, my oldest child (she'll be 7 in a few more days) knows that Christmas is a celebration of Jesus' birth and then she thinks of Santa.

When i hear christmas i think of the the atonement and what our savior did for us.  But i also think of presents and family at that time as well.

I received the following in an e-mail message. I don't know if it is really true or just one of those internet e-mail "stories" but it does make a very good point, which I think fits well on the thread.

"This morning I heard a story on the radio of a woman who was out Christmas shopping with her two children; after many hours of looking at row after row of toys and everything else imaginable, and after hours of hearing both her children asking for everything they saw on those many shelves, she finally made it to the elevator with her two kids.
She was feeling what so many of us feel during the holiday season time of the year---overwhelming pressure to go to every party, every housewarming, taste all the holiday food and treats, get that perfect gift for every single person on our shopping list, make sure we don't forget anyone on our card list, and the pressure of making sure we respond to everyone who sent us a card.

Finally the elevator doors opened and there was already a crowd in the car. She pushed her way into the car and dragged her two kids in with her and all the bags of stuff. When the doors closed she couldn't take it anymore and stated, "Whoever started this whole Christmas thing should be found, strung up and shot." From the back of the car everyone heard a quiet, calm voice respond, "Don't worry. We already crucified him."

For the rest of the trip down the elevator it was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop. Don't forget this year to keep the One who started this whole Christmas thing in your every thought, deed, purchase, and word. If we all did it, just think of how different this whole world would be. "

Xmas Christmas

That was a very fitting story tenaheff, and a good example of how easy it is for people to forget the real meaning of Christmas. As for Xmas vs Christmas, I have been found guilty of using Xmas, but only because I was lazy and didn't want to write out Christmas. I make a conscious effort every Christmas season, especially when I'm in a crowded store or on a busy street, to remind myself that Christmas is all about Christ and not about gifts or food. This year I am even thinking about telling everyone to not buy me anything, but that doesn't mean I wont buy for my family and friends. I am just over getting gifts anymore; for Christmas, for birthdays, etc.

Christmas, or Xmas?

I think the word "Xmas" is just a [sacrilegious] word for people who doesn't believe in Christ, I find that is very disrespectful!
