Instrument Of God

This is my interpretation of a talk I heard while at a single's conference in November, 2004. The speaker was a man named Thomas Tyler, I forget his background... but I do remember that he has 11 children and is a widower; and that he was recently remarried to a woman who has never been married nor has she had any children. Thought that was interesting... Anyway, this post is from my notes of his talk.

"When thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren."
"When ye receive the Holy Ghost, then can ye speak in the tongue of angels."

We can become agents for the Lord to speak His words to lift others in times of need -- their need, not ours. We can become instruments of his love if we will heed the "still, small voice" of the Spirit.

Our own trials teach us to comfort others as we've been comforted. Our own trials give us the capacity to become God's instruments.

(Old Testament | Isaiah 61:3) "To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness ...."

Have you ever experienced the "spirit of heaviness"? Did someone you love -- or even someone you hardly know -- bring you words to uplift you and bring you peace?

Have you ever experienced a sudden thought to call someone you know, just for no reason? Listen to the quiet promptings of the Holy Ghost to uplift your friends and you can become His instrument of love. Do it when you hear it. That's when they need it.

And, on the other end of that gift, accept compliments given to you! Do not disregard the verbal hug! Acknowledge the hand of the Lord in both of your lives. We have been blessed to speak sincerely, "with the tongue of angels."

Look for the "garment of praise" from those you associate with during times of spiritual heaviness. And when you feel prompted to speak to someone, do it!
====================================================

I've experienced both of these phenomena -- I've called someone and had them say, "I really needed to hear your voice, today!" And I've had friends call and lift my spirits when I was "spiritually heavy." I've even heard sweet words from near strangers that have lifted my spirits. How wonderful to think that these are ways that our Heavenly Father reaches out to us with His love and concern.

I was fasting once over a problem I was having. I had fasted a few other times for this same problem and was wondering if there was any point in my fasting. A friend of mine called me shortly after I had this thought. She said she was just calling to see how I was doing. When I said I was fine she said, "I mean how are you doing with respect to ..." It was the exact issue for which I was fasting. I know she called because the Lord wanted me to know he was aware of me at that very moment. My concerns were not going unnoticed.

Just this Saturday I called a friend and invited her out to lunch. She told me I was listening to the Spirit because she had a really difficult week and even at that moment was feeling down in the dumps.

I don't have these experiences often, but I love it when I do. It is a real testimony builder.

On a related note, I gave a lesson in Young Single Adult Family Home Evening recently called, "Being an Instrument in the Lord's Hands when you don't really feel like it." I related a couple of experiences as a missionary when I felt terrible, and in the darkest times I was able to help lift somebody else - not because of my merits, but because of the grace of God and his love working through me.

This has been one of the hardest years of my life, but I have had some friends here who are incredible at lifting me up, and they don't understand how amazing they are. It seems that very few times do we actually realize when we have been instruments in God's hands. The people who help me rarely realize what they have done, even if I thank them. They were sent by God, for his purpose, and how thankful I am!

It's amazing how these seemingly small or random acts of kindness can lift us so much! I am so grateful for how much the Lord loves us and is aware of us.
